Trying to remove the "center clutch" (the thing the inside teeth of the
clutch plates grab)
How do you stop this from turning to remove the nut?
Without snapping parts of it off of course...
TIA,
-Joe
or I think motionpro makes a tool
or
high gear / impact wrench

A pneumatic impact.

Must be installing your Rekluse Auto Crutch, huh?.
I went down to Rekluse yesterday afternoon, one of the guys there and
I put one in my 06 200. Well, he mostly did it, I helped and
"advised". Careful, some of the machined edges are sharp, we both drew
blood at least once. They supposedly have a tumbler now so this won't
be an issue in the future.
While I was looking around for the impact wrench, Zane and Darren got
the nut off by putting it in 6th gear, brake on , done...
Make note of how the tab washer is oriented so you can line it up when
you put the nut back on.
If you don't have a compressor, an electric impact wrench is a handy
tool to have around. If you do have an air supply and aren't going to
be doing really heavy work, a cheap Harbor Fright one will do fine for
most jobs.
If you have access to a belt sander, when you get down to "filing" the
posts down, the sander made short work of it. If not, I'd suggest at
least a new file.
Set the installed gap on the tight end and then a little. You'll gain
.002 - .003 after it's installed and running. Don't ask me why.
We set mine at .033, 10 tungsten balls, short spring. I'll let you
know how it works. We had to substitute one of the stock .059 steel
plates for the .047 Rekluse plate to get our clearance right.
Do you have a dial caliper?

Yup. You don't even need a holder tool with an impact wrench.
I picked up a spare clutch out of a donor bike. Next time
the XRL is apart, I'll probably put in the new/used basket.
I might even donate one of the old steel disks to make a
holder tool.

I'm not to that point yet, something to look forward to.

The pneumatic impact worked great - thanks everybody!!

I just came in from the garage - spent the last hour or so filing those
towers down by hand. That was fun. Man, there's a lot of material to
remove. I went to the rekluse site to verfify I really need to remove
that much material and all I found in the faq was:
>> Does the z-Start require me to modify my existing clutch parts?
>>No. The z-Start simply replaces your stock pressure plate with the z-Start pressure plate. >>No need to take apart the right side of your engine to get the whole clutch out. No need to >>send your parts away for permanent
>>modification or to modify your existing clutch parts.

Yep, I'm printing out the above - I'm not to that point yet (waiting
for the drill to charge to countersink the newly-filed towers).
Thanks David!!

Yeppers - don't see where to use it though.
I'm now to the stage of measuring "gaps" but I can't find my "good"
feeler guages - the ones I use to measure valve clearances on the XR.
I think I'll head into town & get some replacements (that'll make the
old ones leap from wherever I so thoughtfully stored them) - maybe get
some alcohol too, that'll help things for sure.
-Joe
With a .059 (stock) plate replacing a .040 plage I get a .0315
clearance
I suppose if I had a second (extra) .047 plate I could get .037 but I
don't...
which do you rekon is better? the .0315 or the .044 ? the
instructions say .035 is minimum...
-Joe
P.S. Alcohol helped
My suspicion is measuring technique differences could account for your
.0315 and my .033.
I am far from knowing enough to advise past telling you what we did.
Give them a call tomorrow, the phone support is supposed to be pretty
good.

DJ
I can't wait to try it out...
-Joe
I been popping 1st gear wheelies all over the estate. The neighbor
kids (who've received many a lecture from me about always wearing
helmets) are scowling at me while I "break in" the clutch (start
[wheelie], stop, repeat).
Once I turned down the idle a bit, I can click it in and out of gear
without feeling it.
Tomorrow I'll gear up and tackle some of the VW-sized basalt deposits
and see how it does in the vertical...
If it stall I figure to put in the taller spring...
woo hoo
