anyone try the Dunlop MX51 yet?

has it listed on their website, but no local stock. Looks like the
online places still have backstock...
Anyway, I'm thinking of going with the replacement, now called MX51.
Curious if anyone's used it yet.

That's the GeoMax, right? Eric bought one after quite a bit of
comparison shopping. He mounted it up but he hasn't tried it yet. It
looks like it'll work quite well. We've been running 756's forever so
I'm hoping the new one is just as good.

Yep, they make the GeoMax MX31--for mud & other soft terrain replacing
the 773, and the GeoMax MX51 is "intermediate" and a replacement for
the 756. It sounds like they've tried to make the MX51 as much of an
all-purpose tire as possible, we'll see.
I never liked the 756 that much because the edges wore off so quickly,
but I've come to realize that the tire still works pretty well as it
wears (thanks to Baxter's prodding). I thought I'd give it another
chance on this tire change.

I always hated that tire. My impression was that it gave decent
drive, but sucked side-to-side and couldn't hold laterally, at least
in New England goo. Those characteristics in the back makes for a
wagging rear end, which is no big deal, but makes for a really bad
time in the front.
I still like the 739s the best.

I'm running a 756 rear on the KDX now and it has been a great tire, Don't
have any personal experience with the MX51 yet, but this was posted on
Georgia offroad from a similar query earlier today.....

pattern, exactly, just a softer compound. Of course that really sucks to
ride in the hard clay we ride in, I suppose they will break down

If the Cycle Gear guy was trying to say the MX51 is the same tread
pattern as the 756, he's doing a typical Cycle Gear guy job of
spreading bullshit.
I have in my garage a 756 and an MX51 and they are significantly
different. Matter of fact, the Dunlop MX51 tread is almost a carbon
copy of the Michelin S2 that I'm replacing...

for asking for a 756 :)
RockyMtn & mcsuperstore still have stock, if you want to fool with
mail order.
The unfortunately amazing fact is, NONE of the brick & mortar stores
in my area had any tire that I wanted in stock with the exception of
Mach 1. As usual.
Would you agree-the 756/MX51 is probably THE most popular offroad
tire? Dunlop is a MAJOR sponsor of offroad racing, and they're
offering to order one for me, or talk me into a crap chinese tire. If
I ran a mc shop, I'd damn well make sure to have a couple of Dunlops
in the tire rack. Always. It's like a lumber yard with no 2x4's, or a
coffee store that only had decaf beans. phht

All other things being equal, a softer compound is better for a
harder surface.

I really liked the Bridgestone 401/402 tire combination as my best
compromise of "anywhere" tires (rocks, mud, wear characteristics, or
rather handling characteristics as they wore). In fact, when they
were discontinued, I fount them on clearance sale for $90 a set, and
purchased two fronts and four rears.
Someday, I will get around to trying the new stuff when my current
stock gets lower. However, for Idaho next August, I will have a
trials tire on the rear. (Probably one of the Dunlops.)
Not racing seriously has considerably slowed my tire wear rate, (and
requirements).
Back in the early '90s, when I was still sort of fast, I ran Dunlop
752 front and rear, rocks, sand, or mud on my WR430 Huskies.
I kept two sets of tires for my race bike; a new sand/mud set, and the
old former "sand/mud" set, which was now/then my rock set.
Often, depending on the terrain of the next weekend's race, I would
change them back and forth three times a month. (Now that I'm older, I
wonder why in the hell I didn't use the wheels off the parts bike
instead of all the tire changing. I guess I may have gotten smarter in
my old age, to have finally thought of it.)
When the edges rounded off the sand/mud set, or the knobs started
shearing off the rock set, I'd buy a new sand/mud set and the rotation
would begin again.

Yeah, they are nothing alike.
Here on the bay side of the bay area, we're fortunate to have
RoadRider and Zoom, both good shops with lots of dirt stuff and gear
actually sitting on the shelves.

Don't know but got to be one of the top ones. Bridgerock does

I just discovered a new place, can't believe it opened so quietly--Tri
Valley Moto, owned by Kari Prager et al. of Cal BMW is doing
BMW/Triumph/KTM and they've got Aftershocks in their building too--in
Livermore. I'll call them and see what tires they stock :)
