The second most recent issue of Finescale Modeler (with a 1/35 scale Tiger on
the cover) contains an excellent article about how to paint black clothing that
I'd recommend to anyone. I just happened to read it right before I began a 1/16
scale Tamiya figure wearing a black uniform. Had I not read the article, I
would have simply painted the figure black and then drybrushed it with varying
shades of grey. However, the article points out that you should actually paint
the figure a very, very dark blue, drybrush it with varying shades of light
blue and violet, and then use black paint for the shadows. I followed the
advice of the article and couldn't be happier with the results. One thing I did
change, however, is that I used oil paint when I produced the black shadows,
while the author of the article stated that he used acrylics for everything. I
like oil paint for that part because it can be blended more easily and
gradually. The cost of my FSM subscription paid itself off in one fell swoop!

Most blacks are actually very deep blues or browns. If you have a figure
wearing a black wool uniform with black leather boots and belt, you can make it
more lifelike by using a blue-black for the uniform and a brown-black for the
leather. The leather should have a subtle sheen, the fabric should be
dead-flat.
