As far as painting, you can probably do as much or as little as you want.
IIRC the kit even includes colored transparent parts for the signal lights.
The cowling is also transparent green. You can leave it as-is, to show off
the suspension detail, or paint it. Tamiya makes a lime green (TS-52) spray
paint especially for this kit. I don't recall seeing the paint in the
stores yet, tho.
The Tamiya web site shows the length to be 173 mm, which works out to about
6.8 inches.

I haven't got the ZX-12R yet, but have seen the sprues and it looks very very
nice. The quality of Tamiya's latest bikes is simply amazing and the ZX-12R
should be no different. There are 130+ parts and the Tamiya released a special
spray, TS-52 Candy Lime Green for this kit and should be available at ant store
stocking Tamiya paints.
The finished bike has an overall length: 173mm, overall width: 70mm, overall
height: 101mm. More infor on Tamiya's product page:

Like all motorcycles, almost every part has to be cleaned up and painted before
assembly. I don't think the bikes are that difficult at all. If you're new to
motorcycles, I have lots of tips and construction notes on motorcycles at:
