I've noted recently from someone else one the NG (sorry to whoever it was;
I forgot to note the name when I jotted it down) that Polly Scale thinner
is:
10% isopropanol
25% blue antifreeze (presumably propylene glycol, though I don't have any
around to check the label)
65% distilled water
If this is the approximate formula, it would certainly explain why
straight isopropanol causes Polly Scale to curl up and die. What's the
compositon of MM Acryl thinner?

That would be I Mark,

I have used this formula for generic Polly-S Thinner. One should add a drop
or two of dishwashing liquid for emulsion of of the above three. Alcohol is
great for cleaning the airbrush after painting, but it causes acrylic paint
to dry at the airbrush tip too quick, therefore one gets dried clumps of
paint.

There is much difference between old Polly-S and the newer Polly Scale
acrylics. First, old Polly-S was more of a latex paint than an acrylic. It
contained much larger pigments than Polly Scale, which is a true acrylic.
Both thin well with Polly-S Thinner or the above substitute. Model Master
Thinner works just as well, so it depends on what is more available. I only
use distilled water for thinning paints in their bottles when they thicken a
bit, so as to maintain shelf life. The old Polly-S was sorely missed by some
figure modelers and I admit, it hand brushed better than any hobby acrylic,
even Tamiya. But even when thinned and shot through the airbrush, this paint
was rubbery and even more fragile than Gunze.

Acrylics take a little getting used to, but once you learn the techniques,
it's hard to go back to enamels. Now if someone would come out with acrylic
metallic paints like the discontinued Polly Scale Metalline series, I won't
have to resort to using enamels here either.

Thin POLLY SCALE with water -- distilled works best.

I've also successfully reduced it with POLLY SCALE *GLOSS* (in lieu of,
or in combination with, water) for a beautiful, semi-gloss sheen.
Restores the binder lost through excessive thinning.

Gaston Bernal, who markets WARBIRD ACRYLICS (actually POLLY SCALE
formulations), claims that *WINDEX* works beautifully. Haven't tried
it, though.
