Does anyone have good experience using water-based acrylic paint for finishing
rockets. If, so what brands are good, what to stay away from.

Anyone have tips on usage? Any experience with Createx Auto Air? (uses a
catalyst and a binding agent).
Thanks,

Hey Jim, I have been using water based acrylics on all my latest kits..One
word FANTASTIC....The best finish I have obtained is using brand name
" FASTCOLOR" ( Great colors) from Hobby Town , I cut it 50/50 with "FUTURE"
brand floor wax ( they call it floor covering or something ,) from
Walmart....Spay with a small airbrush , After paint has dried for about 2-3
days , use 50/50 Future and Water as a clear coat . It takes quite a few
coats but man what a shine...It dries to the touch in minutes but ( take it
from experience) is not durable for about 5-7 days. If you are painting
color on top of color wait 1-2 days for 1st color to dry... Painting on
clear coat with a brush also works great... be careful for loose bristles .
I usually do a few coats with brush , ( more coverage ) and finish with
airbrush.... Catch ya Later

I've been experimenting with artist's acrylics in tubes. I thin them
with Future floor polish then airbrush. My only disappointment so far
has been the translucence of the white--its taking me many coats to
cover pencil marks on the body tubes. I'm using Liquitex BASIC brand
from Hobby Lobby. I clear coat with unthinned Future.

All good advice .... As for the pencil marks showing through you can
use just a touch of liquid paper for white cover ups or you can mix your
paint color into it . You may have to wipe a piece of 800 grit sand
paper over it once or twice to smooth it down. But it dos work well.

I tried the stuff earlier this year. IMHO, I wasted my money, time and a rocket
on this product. YMMV.

Have anyone used golden fluid acrylics (the airbrush colors looks too
thin....) that is thinned with future?

The Basic line of paint has less pigment than the higher priced artist
paints. You may fine the white of the premium line to have more pigment thus
more hiding power.

auto air sucks... the white always orange peel and if i try to sand it
with any grit they would just peel off like orange peels.

I experimented with FUTURE on some Pinewood Derby cars last winter. Lots of
shine, but the material was so hard it was brittle and scratched easily. I
could easily chip it off with a fingernail. I sprayed it full strength. I did
not let it sit for a week. Maybe that lets it cure better. The Createx Auto Air
product recommends drying with a heat gun so you can put more coats on in
shorter time. Any experience with this?

That was my experience, too. I thought I was doing something wrong. Got a whole
bunch of paint it looks like I'll have to give away. The kids at Montessori
school are gonna clean up!
