I saw this in staples today- 12.99 for 10 pack and says "brilliant results" or
something like that. Does anyone have any experience with this? I've used Avery
clear inkjet labels and they are only fair...colors not too bright and only
transparent against a white background.
If these are truly "clear" they sound like a nice simple way to make basic
decals.

I have used these decals and they work quite well on the ink jet printer but if
your using colors you will have to use them on a white or lite colors background
for instance yellow on a red rocket will not show up. Also these decals are
designed for temporary applications on glass etc. They do not have a very sticky
back you will have to use a clear type adhesive to make them stick. and after you
have applied them I recommend a clear coat for protecting the image

I purchased an ALPS MD 1000 "Micro Dry" printer. Street price is under
$300.00 new. Uses thermal wax transfer method to print water and fade
proof color on any paper, including decal paper purchased from your
local hobby shop (Walther's or MicroScale) or from Tango Papa decals.

This printer prints in color(magenta, cyan, yellow, black), prints WHITE
(yes, white), metallic gold, silver, and metallic cyan and magenta.
Prints at 600x600 or 1200x600 dpi. You can overlay colors, say print a
white rectangle then print red and blue over it to make a US flag that
looks great on any color rocket model. Print anything over white and
you can apply it to any color model and the true colors will show. You
can't even do this with a color laser or xerox machine.

I have printed decals with it and it works great. I also use it to print
digital images in near photo quality. No worry about ink jet nozzles
clogging up from disuse, either. (I know, I have two HP inkjets as
well).

There were a bunch of these printers at www.onsale.com as factory
rebuilds for about $150. (online auction format) last week. May still
be there, haven't checked lately.

Haven't been able to determine exact cost per page, but seems comparable
to inkjets, especially when printing photographs. May be less
economical with graphics due to print method which uses a mylar ribbon
and a thermal head that moves across the paper. The print speed is
slow, but it results in water and fade proof results.

Anyway this is how I solved by rocket decal dilemma, and thought others
might be interested.

P.S. I have no connection with or interest in this company or the onsale
web site. I just build rockets and wish I could find a bigger field to
fly them closer to my house in central Virginia.
