OK you guys who have done this for awhile, I need some help. I am building
a scale boat, 1?96 scale missille frigate. The thing is powered by two 6
volt electric motors and I am going to use a 6 volt 7A battery for power.
The other addons are going to be powered separately. I have ordered a
Nautical Commander Marine Radio for my scale fleet which I plan on building,
but since I am in the new stages of this fleet acquistion I need to seek
your consultation. Do I use two ESC, one for each engine, or do I use one?
How do I figure out which ESC to buy? My planes were to build a switch
whcih would reverse the polarity from my battery giving me both forward and
reverve and then use the throttle (ESC) to adjust my speed in forward and
reverse. perhaps I am going about this all wrong. Let me know.
My other fleet acquistions are a 1/20 scale mid-war model Misquito (PT) boat
and plans for a 1/48 scale WWII Destroyer. Different motor configurations
though, so I'll ask about them when I get to it.
I am at the stage of building this ship where I need to install my
electronics before I seal the hull and only have access through the panels.
I want to be able to get to everything real easy before I install the
remaining decking and check it out. Then it is on to the
superstructures...;-)

You can use two ESC's or just one. If you have one then connect the
motors in parallel, the current rating of the ESC must be double that
of each motor. If you use two ESC's then you can either use a y-lead
to connect them to a single channel or use independant controls. I
have used two ESC's with a mixer to rudder to improve turning.
If you ESC's with both forward and reverse then there is no need to
have a switch to reverse the motors.
As to which to buy? Check the current rating of the motors and make
sure you get an ESC which can handle this current (add on a bit extra
for safety) Make sure it has both forward and reverse.

I've seen them at a Hobbytown USA recently, though they might have been special
ordered.

I built the Darby tug with 2 ESCs. I also used the Nautical Commander and have
full proportional F/R on each motor and have
the rudders on 1 HD servo. I would highly recommend this approach.
As the local ponds are full of fish line to snag the prop(s) and frequently do,
I also built in 2 nylon drive dogs on each gear train. If a prop is snagged, the
pins on the drive dogs strip and the motor freewheels. I still have the other
motor to get me back to port.
Fortunately, I haven't yet been totally snagged or had my rudders
fouled up.
PS, I also have twin bilge pumps, lights, siren, foghorn and a diesel sound
generator and 4" speaker all operated by the Commander.

You can get it from www.harbormodels.com for $215, maybe cheaper.
