Hi all,
Just curious if anyone has ever used bungie cord instead of surgical
tubing for a high start. Is there a big differnce in elasticity (sp?).
I have access to lots of bungie materail from 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch and
will be launching a 2 meter and 100 inch bird. Opinions?
Thanks in advance,
CrazyHerb

Herb,
Yeah, I use bungie cord instead of surgical tubing to launch 2 metre
gliders. I use bungie for two reasons...... One, its a lot more durable than
surgical tubing and two, its about half the price as latex tubing.
BUT surgical latex tubing is by far the better product. You get better
launches with tubing and the action is kinder to your gliders structure.
Bungie kinda "snaps" ya model up where tubing gives a much nicer
controllable launch.
Regards
Shannon

Bungie may actually have an advantage - it has some more resistance
to UV. I do not know if there is any difference in elasticity. If there
is then a little more length will help.
I think that 1/8 may be too litle and 3/8 is absolutely too much. If
you have access to a working High Start then you can experiment
and find the type of bungie that has similar properties.

In article <371ac0b...@news.jps.net>, craz...@jps.net says...
They are really two different products, the typical surgical tubing can be
stretched between 8 and 12 times it's "normal length", a typical bungee cord
can only be stretched 2 - 3X it's length. Much more power available in the
surgical tubing for a much longer period of time. Get surgical and get with it!

In the early 70's the Astro-Flite Heavy Duty Hi-start was bungee. 1/4", I
think. I used it to launch my AFI ASW-17. I later found out that HD
surgical didn't launch my 60-oz glider as well, unless I had a good breeze
to launch into.

Bungee will give you the impulse over a shorter period of time, so you may
need more length to get the same launch. I usually stretched it only 2X,
since the literature with the hi-start said that more was bad. It lasted
quite a few years.
