Thanks. The reason I was asking, in brief, was that I had visited
the park recently and talked to someone "in charge" and was left
with a very bad impression. I've since learned from someone else
that the person in question has a reputation for appointing themselves
the policeman of the field and should be ignored.

In any case, I flew there today and had a great time. There is a
designated "glider field" that's quite large. It's on the very
north-west corner of the park.

BTW, I live but ten minutes from Arbor Park. Not been there, but
something about flying RC next door to a military airfield is
bothersome. Sure, it's not a very active field, but still....
Probably no chance to recover a downed plane over the fence?

I've been flying there two times now and both times have been
very enjoyable. Although, this is on Friday's rather than Saturday's.

Today I had one gentleman prod me about the requirement of AMA and
I just told him my app's in the mail and he seemed happy. At least
he wasn't a jerk about it.

Yes, I will be joining. I was just waiting to get the AMA#
for the other fellow who helped me re El Dorado so I can put
him down as the reference since he encouraged me to fly there
in spite of the "policeman".

Speaking of which, he told me that there has been some discussion
in his club about this "policeman" due to my encounter. The
problem is that it is an open field and he's not in any of the
clubs, so it's hard to enforce anything.

There is at least a glider club that uses and competes at
El Dorado. The person that set me straight helps run the
club. Insurance is not required as it is an open field and
a city park at that. The city cannot require you to join
AMA. They may require insurance but he was not aware of
them doing so.

I joined AMA not for the insurance, but as was pointed out
on a forum I read elsewhere, to support an organization
that acts as a voice towards the government to protect
my interests. The FAA and FCC after all are allowing us
to do what we do.

I just think a few people like to act high and mighty
and appoint themselves the local asshole...errr...policeman.

To be honest, the substance and goal of what they say
is good and laudable, but their approach is much to be
desired. I would love to correct these folks, but I am
the new kid on the block..... for now.

You could always try using that most favoured of phrases when "Cop-Lite"
shows up.

"Fuck off cunt" It work wonders.

Yeah, that's my instinct as well. I wouldn't care what he thought,
but I don't want to make waves to the other folks I may be flying
along side.

You'd be doing what they all want to do but are too scared to do.

Very probable. I think I'll wait a bit and try to feel out if that
is the sentiment. Then, if he get's in my face on something I'll
feel more comfortable telling him off.

Although, I might not be bumping into him much anyway. I have Fri
& Sat off from work and have been flying Friday's. It seems he's
only there on weekends.
