Hello All.

I'm new to this type of thing

I recently borrowed a friends reflex xtr simulator, he lent me his before I
committed to buying my own, which I've now done but and there's always a
but..

Whilst having my friends my son jammed the dongle into the use port, causing
smoke to come out of the USB port, my wife grabbed the lead and yanked it
out of the computer still smoking and threw it at the sink and unfortunably
when it landed it went down the waste disposal, auto starting it and the
machine whirled gobbling up the dongle and part of the cable. All we have
left in the basket is a few mangled bits of metal not washed away and part
of the lead my wife managed to wrestle back from the sink. We can replace
the cable but having spoken to a couple of model shops including the UK
importer its not possible to buy a replacement dongle.

And we cant take advantage of the fantastic customer service replacement
scheme of the manufacture as there's little left to see what it actually
is/was.

do any of the third party interfaces/dongles work with reflex?, does anyone
have one they would be willing to sell ? I really don't want to buy another
simulator at full rate if this can be avoided.

thanks.

Mick.

if you have emailed reflex and explained but they wont exchange the dongle
the only thing you can do is purchase another reflex sim as you cant buy the
dongle on its own and nothing else will allow you to use the sim sorry.

Call me a cynic (or any other chosen expletive), but this sounds like a bad
script for a bad sketch show writen by a bad writer with a bad imagination.
It wouldn't be broadcast.

If the dongle caused the 'puter to smoke and the waste disposal ate it,
you'll probably have to buy a legitimate dongle to accompany your legitimate
disc.

A more popular reason is "the dog ate my dongle" and slightly more
believable too.

btw, Reflex would know if the bits remaining are their bits. It's what they
do, build them.

Assuming this to be true - have you tried at the manufacturer?
If there is anything of the original pcb or the original ATMEL processor
left, it is not too hard to identify.
I'd send them the pieces left and see.

Otherwise the only thing left is buying another simulator - which is by
no means prohibitive - the computer is probably more expensive if it
actually caused the dongle to go up in smoke.

Search some P2P network for reflex electronic crack which includes a
schematic for creating the dongle and machine code for the 16c745
microchip. Since your friend already payed for his Reflex I don't think
there are any legal issues involved.

it was the forcing of the dongle in the wrong way round that has caused the
damage, electronics rarely like voltages up them the wrong way round.

I'm in the process of posting back whats left, but its only small bits of
blue plastic and munched metal loosly looking like a usb plug.

400ma at 5volts is enough to KILL A HUMAN if applied in the right place, and
shoving it into a USB device at the wrong polarity is more than likely to
cause damage.

have taken the original box/cd/receipt to the place of purchase together
with whats left and that wasnt good enough for them, I'm in the process of
posting back the bits to the UK importer they seem to be a little more
sympathetic.

If that does not work, contact Reflex in Germany directly, I have found
them very friendly and helpful for all reasonable requests.
I would expect parts associated with proof of purchase to be enough.

if only you're body has a resistance of 12.5ohms but 400ma is way over
the current to kill you, 60ma is enough but at 5 volts you need a
resistance of less than 125 ohms which is way lower than your bodies
resistance of 1000's of ohms
but how someone that can plug a USB device upside down is beyond me

have you tried it? I have and I cannot force it the wrong way and even
if you did its next to impossible for the connectors to touch the worst
you could do is short out the pc, and before you answer have a good look

*ding* And not only that, without the dongle, it's possible to register the
purchase on-line, which also allows you to use the on-line features. If it's
not registered and the CD case has had its numbers accidentally rubbed off,
and the dongle has been eaten by a self nourishing waste disposal unit, then
it's looking like a whole new program will need to be paid for.

Somehow, this whole thing just doesn't have the right ring to it.

You need to spend more time on Usenet. All life is here and it's not pretty.

If you REALLY bought the program, then I'm sure Reflex will be happy to sort
out the problem, so it's not going to hurt you to get in touch with them and

May I suggest to the original poster to report back here after having
contacted Reflex in Germany himself, and having tried to sort out the
situation with the manufacturer?
And the others to refrain from further comments until then?

I think this avoids unneccessary implications.

Yes, but the `right place' is not reachable without actually breaking
your skin (i.e. applying the 5 volts directly to your heart would
probably do it, but little else would.) Technically, it's the
amperage (through your heart) that kills, not the voltage -- but you
can't have amperage without voltage to push it through your body, and
5 volts isn't nearly enough. I believe that about 32 volts is the
lowest voltage that has ever killed anybody, and that's a lot lower
than it normally takes.

And that's irrelevant -- `enough to kill somebody' or not has little
to do with the ability to `smoke' something. And yes, 2 watts (5V *
0.4A) IS enough to let the magic smoke out of a chip given a few
seconds of it.

And really, assuming that the story is true, I'd say the original
poster has a bigger problem than a fried dongle. A garbage disposal
that auto-starts? I'd suggest replacing that immediately before it
removes some fingers. (And please, give us the manufacturer/model
number of this garbage disposal that auto-starts.)

Tells you nothing, if you had botherd to read the original posting you'd
already have your answer, in fact what it does tell you is that YOU KNOW
WHERE to find the details to build dongles and I didnt, mainly because I

Well this bastard spent 30 odd years passing on info on heli's before he
realised that there are other things in life. A bitch I know :-) On top of
which, the electric heli boom leaves me colder than a cold mans dead cold
thing and just about every post these days is about electric, so it's not
seemed worth the effort to keep the site updated.

I'd actually forgotten it was still "out there" somewhere, to the point I
can't even remember the bloody URL anymore:-)

well I just went to a well known model shop and apart from cars, crap
electric park flyers, 7 r/c model kits all the helicopters he had were
30 or so different electric helicopters and 1 normal Raptor
and even my local market stall has a toy shop and it had several R/C

its seems the market is overflowing with them

I've had a couple of those over the years and I believe a pal of mone still
has one in an unopened box. Great flying heli's.

Concept. The original 30's were great for larning the basics (that's the D
version), then for regular aero's, the SE and finally for serious 3D, the SR
and VR. The 60s didn't have as many variations, but they were (and still
are) a superb flying machine.

| I'm thinking my charger might be FUBAR.

False peaking -- that's a classic sign of a pack that needs a
formative charge.

Discharge it (but not enough so that any cell gets reverse-charged --
down to 4 volts total should be fine) then put it on a slow charge for
about 40% longer than math tells you should be required for a full
charge. (So if it's a 100 mA charger, 24 hours will work nicely.)

If discharging is hard, you can skip that step, but the results will
be better if you do. Just don't discharge it so much that you reverse
one of the cells -- that does damage.

Once done, discharge it again, and then it should peak charge
properly. A discharge and then a 1C charge later, and it's probably
ready to fly.

This generally doesn't have to be done often, but often does have to
be repeated when a pack is *fully* discharged (like if you leave your
TX on overnight.)

The secondshot and was a foot too low. The third cried, "We hit it!"

people this is just one of the guys that has just downloaded the game
and noticed that you cant play it with an regular transmitter.

but that's not the point, his question is just where you can get an new
dongle.

but dude, you said you borrowed it becouse you wanted to know if it's
worth the money, believe me it is. so if you just buy one with the
origanal reflex transmitter you shouldn't have any problems.

I don't know how old your son is (I think that's a lie to) but first of
all: he's dump if he tries to put an square into an round hole. and
second of all: he's really strong if he can put it trought metal.
