My Mother has forwarded my grandfathers Lionel train set to me. I know it is
very old, about 40 years old.

It is a 2-4-2 steam engine, all plastic body, the serial on the engine is
1060. I have the coal car, a caboose, a hopper car, and a box car that
"explodes" (it has a mouse trap like thing inside), and some track. I do not
have the transformer.

I would like to find out more on its history. Can someone point me to a good
resource?

Thank you for your help.

Howard

The links in other posts provide good info on your 1060 loco. Here is some
other data I don't think you'll find on-line

The 1060 locomotive was listed in a total of 4 sets in the "advance
catalogs" for 1960, 61, & 62, but was never cataloged in a set listed in the
regular Lionel consumer catalogs. (The advance catalog was only for
dealers, and was issued early each year with Lionel's potential product line
to test the market, and help identify sets to be cataloged by Lionel and
other combinations to be offered by retailers like Sears, Penny's etc.)

A set # 19147 offered to smaller retailers in 1962 which included:
1060 loco
1060T streamlined tender
6480 exploding box car
3309 turbo missile launching car
6042 blue gondola car
6167 red "SP" type caboose
8 O-27 curved track
2 O-27 straight track
1026 transformer

This is the only set I can find that ever included both the 1060 loco and an
exploding box car. Could this be the set you have? It is very unlikely
Lionel ever offered an exploding box car with out also offering something to
shoot at it. Could other parts (besides the transformer) of your set be
lost? Gary Q
