Sounds like a good combination to me. I'm also looking for a throttle that realistically simulates train controls: engine and train brakes, dynamic braking, etc.
I'd like to eventually build a system that also simulates train grade, tonnage, air temperature, and lashup. Sound is an important aspect of this concept, as it provides essential feedback to the engineer regarding his/her inputs relative to actual performance. Infrared is a little less important to me (my layout will be relatively small). DCC is perhaps the most critical technology, as any sort of block control requires complex engineering in both hardware and software, and you still can't run your locomotives independently in close quarters. And DCC decoders handle dynamically programmable momentum, one less thing to build into my system.
I don't know how many others out there would love to have this combination but here is my dream control system:
1. Versitilities and features of Digitrax DCC 2. Simplicity and hand trottle of Rail-Lynx infrared 3. Great sound Effects of Soundtraxx
Put these all together and you would have one heck of a control system. SoundTraxx has the best sound effect, Rail-Lynx the best hand trottle and all around feel, and Digitrax the best features and versitility. I wish someone, (maybe one of the three), would incorporate the best atributes of all three and put out one great control system.
These are my thoughts and opinions only. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Steve: Don't know about the Rail-Lynx, But I would sure agree if it was Aristo Craft radio throttle
Jim's post about radio control is interesting. I use a PBL sound control system with Infrared remotes. Because my layout is 50 x 20 x 6, it requires several repeaters to transmit the infrared.
It would seem to me that radio control would be better. Why did Soundtraxx and PBL use the infrared remotes. True they are much more powerful than your common everyday TV remote.

PS The package sounds right on, and it is just a matter of time until someone developes this package at a reasonable price. My opinion.

I'm just starting to look at DCC and consider sound and wireless to be integral parts of the whole. I still don't know who might have "the unified solution", and playing around with all the electronics of 3 or more unrelated systems looks, well, daunting. Steve Moore wrote >...

Digitrax will be offering an Infra Red throttle in the near future. These will have all the features of the current throttles except tehtherless. The IR sensors will be located in the layout fascia so it should work quite well.
Sound will be a growing area with many improvments in years to come as parts become smaller and better. The real weak link is finding a great speaker that will give good bass tones and still be under an inch in diameter so you can fit it into an HO loco!
