Savage inequalities, indeed. This book, by Jonathon Kozol, is a
testimony to the injustice and brutality of the American public school
system. After spending two years touring some of the country's best and
worst schools, Kozol put together a terrifying and heartbreaking summary
of everything that is wrong with public education. Schools without
running water, trash collection, or text books. Students who are
sentenced to live in fatally toxic conditions without hope of escape.
Teachers who work for less than minimum wage in over-crowded classrooms
under threat of violence. If you haven't read this book, you should. It
will open your eyes to a world of anger and pain that many of us never
get to see.
The public school system in the U.S. is set up so that the majority of
funding comes directly from local property tax. In affluent
neighborhoods, this means low tax rates on high-value property vs. a
destitute neighborhood's high tax rates on low-value property. This
creates a situation in which the wealthy can effortlessly raise a
surplus of money for their children's educations, whereas the poor tax
themselves at an exorbitant rate just to meet a bare minimum. Many would
argue that state and federal funding is available, therefore the
inequalities are remedied. That's actually not true.
Here's why:
The federal government counts property tax as a tax deduction.
Therefore, the wealthier you are (and the more property tax you paid to
your school district), the more money you get back as a subsidy. In
other words, Uncle Sam paid the rich for being rich and left the poor to
fend for themselves.
Not only did the government screw the poor through subsidy, they also
stole a great deal of their best real estate. The number of entirely
tax-free institutions, like colleges, museums, hospitals etc, are in
cities. We don't normally think of these institutions as having a
negative effect on an area, but if you look at it from an economic
standpoint, they actually add to the inequality. Kozol cites 30% or more
of the potential local tax base for cities as being tax-exempt, compared
to perhaps 3% in the suburbs. The children who live in these affluent
suburban areas, of course, benefit from the use of these tax-free
institutions and are far more likely to enjoy the use of universities or
museums than their impoverished urban counterparts.
Many people, even those who view themselves as liberals on other issues,
tend to grow indignant, even rather agitated, if invited to look closely
at these inequalities. "Life isn't fair," one parent in Winnetka
answered flatly when I pressed the matter. "Wealthy children also go to
summer camp. All summer. Poor kids maybe not at all... Weatlhy children
have the chance to go to Europe and have the access to good libraries,
encylopedias, computers, better doctors, nicer homes. Some of my
neighbors send their kids to schools like Exeter and Groton. Is
government supposed to equalize these things as well?"
But government, of course, does not assign us to our homes, our summer
camps, our doctors--or to Exeter. It does assign us to our public
schools. Indeed, it forces us to go to them. Unless we have the wealth
to pay for private education, we are compelled by law to go to public
school--and to the public school in our district. Thus the state, by
requiring attendance but refusing to require equity, effectively
requires inequality. Compulsory inequity, perpetuated by state law, too
frequently condemns our children to unequal lives.
Oftentimes the wealthy are seen as dignified, civilized, cultured and
productive citizens of society. The poor are looked down
upon--uneducated, dirty, savage. Reading this book, however, makes one
wonder who the real savages are.

the COUNTRY so that their kids can get into this school. It has

much more help, sympathy, etc than if you are clean cut, non-drinker,

the substance abusers who steal to buy drugs, spend all their money
maybe fortunes on drugs & thus are "poor", are so sympathy-getting cause
it is the fault of the man or power or whoever they can blame besides

kept neighborhood schools. Not rundown pieces of garbage. ( Pehaps you
should talk to some teachers who watched what happened ). My neice went to
one such taken over high school. She did not eat, or drink any water, during
the day so she did not have to use the rest rooms in your precious
intergrated schools. The schools now smell of neglect. I know. I have one
right down the road from me. Kids from this neighborhood cannot go there.
They will be bussed to some other school. It is stupid sad thing to see.
You cannot make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Face it, Dump, your great
intergration experiment is a dismal failure. The public schools are now 95%
miniority and we are still bussing kids all over creation and wasting money.
Meanwhile we destroyed the neighborhood public school. Even blacks here, who
want a good education for their kids, send them to private schools. Plenty
do.
In this parish ( county) alone, the state had to recently step in and take
over 27 public schools. In New Orleans ( a parish that had an 85% black
population), before Katrina, the public school system had gotten so bad it
was contracted out to a private firm in an attempt to turn it around. Now
vouchers are being used in New Orleans. Of course you do know Houston's
crime rate went up 25% courtesy of Katrina evacuees.
Social promtions so teachers keep their jobs is not exactly the cornerstone
of education.
And dont tell me about poverty because my wife's father was poor. When he
went to high school all he had to eat was a biscuit and sometimes a sweet
potato. He pulled himself up. So stow that excuse.
What is really funny is we have two of the biggest black universities in the
nation. Funny you never screamed about their student body. Do you even know
why blacks send their kids there. They send them so they cannot hide behind
the excuse that the teacher is a racist, if they make bad grades. The awful
truth about them is they are not very well run; and too many of their grads
recieve a substandard education. Only 70% of their education grads can pass
the teacher's certification exam as opposed to 98% of Louisiana State
Universities' grads. I think the black community ought to demand better and
you ought to quit making excuses for them.
Your truths are mostly bullshit excuses. If you would come out from behind
them and demand standards be ahered to, instead of making them, then things
might improve.

My sister in law does and I talk to her about it all the time. What she
tells me I dont believe I would want to. I used to hire school teachers, who

Do you remember the school out in Oklahoma they poured money into because of
a court order. Literally spent a fortune on it. Surely you read about it. It
was written up in Time Magazine. Know what all that money made a sparkling
educational building with all the latest equipment. Do you know what did not
improve. The kids scores. Zero, Nada, None. So when you start thinking it
all comes down money - you are a fool. That is why we had the concept of
neighborhood schools. So the neighborhood would take an interest, take

I find it strange that every docu drama I see about minority schools

so what my parents could afford or not has nothing to do with it. For
high school the only costs you have to carry are books etc, you do
*not* pay some fee to join a school.
The particular school I went to had an entry exam for math, language
skills etc. So this might be disciminating to people who are dumb or
who had bad education in primary school (I went to a public primary
school btw).
Also it was a catholic school, again this might be discriminating to
muslims or other religiions (although in reality this was not the
case, as a muslim you could go to school there - but you would have to
follow the theology classes and go to mass a few times per year as
well).

I went to a primary school with minorities, it was a public private
school. Others came from private primary schools, and indeed they
might have been better prepared. C'est la vie, in the end in the end
it is the student itself that has to do the work and that has to use
the opportunities he is given well.
I could have chosen to go to an easier school, so that I didn't have
to do any effort to pass, but I (and my parents) chose not to. Kids
who do not have parents that support their choices and that want them
to excell might be screwed in life compared to those that have such
parents.
One would expect parents that are poor to push their kids even more so
that they can do better in life. If these parents do not motivate
their kids then really can you blame discrimination or poverty? Or are
they just mediocre parents?

Strange, historically protestants seem to have run away from
catholics ;-)
