I think they even have a 5th of July.

I just checked and it looks like those fuckers went and copied ALL our
days!
Some of them even speak, um, French.....and those sneaky French have a
different word for *everything*!

damn them. I knew the French had to be behind it all. Those evil
people with funny noses and strange accents. I think we should
invade. I hear they have coal, or tar sands, or sand, or something
like that. They have this thing called socialized medicine, so that
must make them communists or something. That's plenty of reasons.

I have some French in-laws so I'm cool with any invasion plans you may
have. I got given a truffle over the weekend and no matter how I wrap
the bastard, it still stinks the house out. The brie is about to grow
legs and walk out of its own accord and I'm fucked if I'm gonna eat
another baguette.
The Canadians had a choice in all this? Maybe they should be nuked from
orbit....it's the only way to be sure ;>

We intend to blitz and sieze the breweries first. No quarter, no brew, and
an unconditional surrender.

We hear the French are already preparing for the invasion. They are
attaching their white underwear to poles for the surrender.
:D
P.
You should work for the tourism office... eh?
To folk like me who rug up < 20C, this seems almost beyond belief.
You must have hot chicks and lots of really good beer.

This just in... as a result of this thread, France has officially
surrendered to rec.martial-arts.
We just have good housing. I've worked with people from Australia and England. One of the reasons they have trouble believing how
cold it gets here is that their own countries are so miserable in the winter. If it's 15 C outside in Perth, it's pretty much 15
inside. Central heating and insulated wood framed houses make us more comfortable in winter than you.
So long as we're inside, of course. Outside we're freezing our balls off.
Neil
Shouldn't be a problem. As the old joke goes, how do you get 20,000 Canadians out of the pool? Ask them to leave.

*smoking* hot, my friend... And I believe the British currently use
Canadian beer as a benchmark ;)

So do we.

This is kinda right, primarily because we have short, cool winters and
long, hot summers. Houses in Perth are a little different than say,
houses in Melbourne, where the climate is different. It only gets really
cold in a handful of places here. Central heating is simply not
cost-efficient in 99% of Australia.
> Central

I certainly noticed how warm US houses were in winter, much of it oil
heating. I wonder how much longer that will be the case.
>and insulated wood framed houses make us more comfortable in

A large % of Aussie houses are insulated and that % will go even higher
as part of our 'economic stimulus' package is govt insulation subsidies.
As regards timber framed houses, that's another whole thread ;>)
> So long as we're inside, of course. Outside we're freezing our balls off.
I really respect folk who live in climates inimical to human survival.
There's no time of the year here where I couldn't go for a 1/2 hour
walk, stark naked, and be in fear of my life. From the weather.
You know what I mean.

it's not *THAT* the wind blows, it's *WHAT* the wind blows.. Don't you
guys get dust storms and the like every once in a while? I could see
that putting a damper on that walk of yours.
:)
A friend of mine who has also traveled a fair old bit for work has a theory: people are willing to pay only so much per year to
heat/cool their house. They spend enough money on insulation to get to that point, and good enough. It would be interesting to see
if his theory holds up.
Right now there are a number of project houses that are built to be comfortable with very little outside energy required. Mine is
not one of them. I buy about $1600 worth of natural gas a year to heat that sucker.
I think eventually most new homes in Canada will be built to R2000 standard or higher and possibly incorporate solar panels.

Whereas pretty much every year, we lose one or two people who go for a drive on the highway with nothing more than a light jacket
and sneakers, break down in a storm and then do something idiotic like walk for help. Winter in Saskatchewan can kill, no doubt.
However at least you can easily prepare for it. We don't worry too much about tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes here.
Neil
...for urine tests.
Yeah, they're pretty hot...and when you've shorn them, you can make a
sweater out of the hair!

"old boy, try this Canadian beer. it adds a whole new meaning to 'take
the piss'".

thank you for contributing to the heat death of the universe.
Okay, they're both basically carbonated piss...
At least ours comes with a decent ration of alcohol.
I'll take quality over alcohol content.
It's a rare phenomenon in the city, but it does happen. When I moved to
Perth from Sydney, I put the family on a plane and I drove across the
country. At one stage I was 'chased' by a colossal dust storm. Against a
blue sky, this storm looked like a 10 mile high yellow/orange wave, one
of the most awesome sights I've ever seen.
During a drought and if the conditions are just so, these monsters
wander into a city; Melbourne had one some years ago IIRC, but that's
what you get for living in Melbourne. <snicker>

I drank Shlitz (sp?) beer at an all-you-can-eat buffet in Denver one
time. That was in 1987. I haven't had a beer since. Need I say more?

Hope you got some pics of that wave :).
Oh.. and the -40 thing tends to kill just about anything that could
bite, sting or otherwise poison you. I'll take the cold, thanks

BRADOR IS THE SHIT!!!
I buy a few cases every time I go up north.
So says the Bud-Swiller.
I see you never had Falstaff or Jax. You would still have your head in the
commode.
I've only ever seen one and it was in Melbourne in the 80s. It was amazing.
You could stare at the sun and it was just a dull orange blob. Surreal.
