I'm back from Bali. Yellow Bamboo update. Long.

Well after a week in Bali I am back. I have the full report of what
happened to me ready. Here is the full unabridged story.
I got the Yellow Bamboo details off their website and hired a driver in Bali
to take me too the address. It was a two hour drive and in the middle of
nowhere. I was a bit suss but when I got to the Sacred River Resort I
basically asked if they had heard of Yellow Bamboo and got blank looks.
They pointed by driver to a place round the corner and to me to look for a
guy called Alvin.
We got driven to a pretty remote place on the top of some cliffs and found
some nice bungalows where Alvin was staying. He is the guy who put up the
yellow bamboo website and is an American who lives between Bali and the
Canary Islands and follows the surf around the world. He is a pretty cool
guy and his story is that he made a bomb in the early eighties and travels
around the world with his family surfing. He is the only Westerner that is
certified to be a Yellow Bamboo instructor. He was surfing on the massive
waves at the bottom of the cliffs when we got there and his wife waved him
in.
He was really friendly and offered me and my wife some coffee and we stayed
for a couple of hours to chat. He told me that he has been involved with
Yellow Bamboo for a couple of years and has searched around for that sort of
hoopy stuff while he was in Bali. He said that he saw a lot of scams in
his search and Yellow Bamboo is the first thing he saw that was remotely
credible.
He then basically showed me what they do which looked a lot like my limited
knowledge of Chi Gung. Very similar. He said that he felt more tired from
a session of YB than he would from surfing or kung fung etc.
I asked him about Pak Serengen and he said that he basically was the head of
Silat in Bali. He said that he had a revelation about 10 years ago and
started the Yellow Bamboo thing.
I also asked about Joko Tri. He showed me a letter signed by James Randi
and Joko, nominating Joko as his designated rep to do the test in Bali.
There was a rep from the media also there who apparently was some Radio guy
from Bali. I saw video of him doing the test.
Alvin made the yellow bamboo website as a personal favour to Pak Serengen.
He said that it cost him about $2500 out of his own pocket to put it up. He
said they have had about 15000 people download the video so far. Originally
the study from home course was free and Alvin said they were getting hits
like crazy on it. He said in order to make it appear more worthwhile they
started to charge for it because of the western perception that anything
that is free is crap. He said since they began charging for it they have
basically had about 1 sale a week. He said he is running a personal loss of
around $2300. So I don't think they are in it for the money.
He said it cost him about $15US for his member ship 2 years ago. He said
for that he got a Sash, a T-shirt, a keyring, some stickers and a meditation
shawl. Even in Bali they could not be making much money out of it.
He said that he has done the knock people down thing but was not sure if
they were just falling over themselves. He said that when he did it first
one person did not fall down and managed to hit him which made him think it
may be real. He said himself he is only 98% sure it is real. He said he
would not want to bet $1000 either way.
We then saw the video that you guys saw of Joko Tri attacking. He said Joko
was late and they had to park 3 cars on the beach with their high beams on
to get the video. He said if you look closely at the video you can see 2
attackers behind Joko one of which falls backwards. He made a point of
saying it would be hard to fall backwards but myself and my wife both said
we could easily do it.
Alvin said when he first saw Yellow Bamboo he thought it might be
hypnotherapy but he has dual doctorates in psychology one specialising in
hypnotherapy and it did not seem they were using any of the usual
techniques.
Alvin also said that most of the locals knew of Yellow Bamboo or Bamboo
Cuning as it is called in the local language. He asked if we had asked our
driver about it and we said know. We went outside and asked him and he said
he had heard of it and it was quite common in Bali. Their figures of 30,000
members would mean 1 in 10 people in Bali which did not seem a really
unreasonable figure. Our driver said that it was regularly on Balinese
television but the closest thing I saw looked like a Balinese version of
Xena warrior princess.
Basically after going to Bali and meeting Alvin I am no closer to the truth
than before going. He said that Pak Serengen would probably be willing to
come to Australia and teach his course for free if we were willing to pay
his airfare and accommodation. I will talk to my JJ school and to Peter
about the viability of sponsoring this sort of a trip. It would at least
get it out of Bali and give the claims some credibility.
Now for the wierd shit. I brought my video camera with me to tape whatever
was going to happen. I got back to the hotel at the end of the day and had
a look at the tape. The first 2 minutes of the tape were fine but all the
stuff with Alvin did not turn out at all. It was completely blank. I will
show Peter the tape on Tuesday night at BJJ. It was fucking wierd. I think
it may of been a co-incidence but who would of guessed it. I took over 5
days of other video which was all fine.
Anyhow there is a few more bits and pieces but that is the most of it. I
would love to tell you one way or the other whether it works but all I can
tell you is that Yellow Bamboo is not just a troll on RMA. They are not in
it for the money. As Alvin himself said, maybe Pak Serengen is entirely
delusional but he is definitely not in it for the money. It was a great
experience and it was good to meet Alvin as he was a very interesting guy.
He is a millionaire in his own right and really is not into this for the
money. He said the Randi challenge has proved to be a big pain in the ass
to him personally because Randi is completely cantankerous and Pak Serengen
is completely contrary. He said being between the two of them is a real
pain. He also said that they are the only people to become classified as
candidates for the Randi challenge.

Second, it was reassuring to hear and confirms my belief that when two
MA folk, of whatever discipline, meet up, and they are confident in
themselves and their own system, and aware of its and their own

Third, which I must also ask, did you cross hands at all with Alvin?
Or did you feel that things could go wrong if you took the interaction
to a physical level? Or was it just inappropriate in the
circumstances?

I know you didn't have any way of verifying what you were hearing, but
two things Alvin said seem notable. One, he has dual doctorate in
pyschology (one specializing in hypnotherapy) and two, he is a
millionaire.
If you stay in contact with Alvin, maybe you can follow these up a bit.
Even a last name would help -- I am sure there are folks here who would
spend some time doing searches to find more information. If his
credentials check out, that might lend more weight to his observations.
If they don't, that might mean something, too ...

Do a Google search for Alvin Donovan Jr. You'll get lots of stuff.
Including him being labelled "kook of the year" on alt.surfing. He made his
money doing get rich quick seminars. Seems to have worked for him at least.

stringent controls to these things or they will 'trick' the
applicant and pass the test. This creates problems, b/c then
they have a claim against Randi, especially if he gave written

But it's his USD$1m, so James Randi can do as he wishes.
It will still come down to whether Pak can drop James Randi in the ways
described without resorting to trickery.

that's why Randi has rules about "preliminary challenges". Joko Tri
passed that; that qualifies him for extra attention from the Randi- doesn't mean
anybody won money.
next, Randi blubbers about yawk yawk yawk, and a more stringent test is set up.
that test will be EXTRAORDINARILY well documented, with much attention given
to everything, and will most likely result in Randi pulling out because YB won't meet
his "scientific" standards for experiment.
they will say, ' do the initiation and it will work' and he will say, 'it should work w/o
the moon stuff' and they will say 'no' and he will say, ' fine- no $$'
and the question of why it might work with or without the moon dealie will remain
unstudied until doomsday.
this is why scientists disapprove of the fiscal reward system of inquiry- it leads to a
corruption of honest inquiry and honest answers.

You gotta realise it was in a country where less than 12 months ago fanatics
bombed an Australian place with over 200 casualties. No way was I going to

I didn't cross hands with Alvin. He told me he has been banned from giving
demos because last time he did it he hurt someone. I was pretty interested
in just meeting the guy, and his family invited me into their home and I
gave them the respect you would give anyone in that situation. Getting gung
ho and starting to punch the guy would of been not very appropriate. It's
not what I am about anyway as a person.

I was meant to be going in November for the actual challenge. I went on
holiday so I thought I would check it out first. I still may be asked to go

I saw the same video everyone here saw and I agree the guy dropped. I
didn't say that I still don't think it was faked. Please don't misrepresent

You have advanced degrees in psychology, one with particular emphasis
on hypnotherapy, and the idea of such practice influencing mental
states never occurred to you? Really?
Understand, as somebody with a mystical bent, I'd love for this to be
real, but so far, the conditions required for the test preclude
unbiased science regarding it. A tape of somebody falling down,
assuming it is altered in no way, only shows them falling down -- it
does not demonstrate the *cause* of that fall.
I'll grant you that they fell. Even that the attackers in no way
consciously faked so doing. But it's a long way from that to verifiable
proof that the cause was, in that moment, external energy and not
pre-programming that caused an altered mental state.

I know for myself when my friends and I go camping that if it gets
late and a lot of beers get consumed that quite often a second "Moon"

I haven't been here for a while now, but reading this, that was
immediately the question and suspicion I had. Any SE-Asian YB-believer
(even someone who borrowed the instructional material from a friend!),
could contact Randi and offer his "services". Maybe he was just looking
for the last "convincing" contact with the group and hence being biased.
I think that Randi should select a "Brite-Martial Artist" to send over,
even for the prequalifier.
I didn't see the tape, I saw the other videoclips and judging from
those, the falls are staged. I remember this on clip with a
YB-practitioner, obiously dropping backwards and having a grin on his
face... and no, that was not a painful grimace.
So, I totally agree with you that this was not a scientific experiment.

You saw a video of the journalist who was there witnessing the event
and the journalist gave his name and agreed he had witnessed the
event.
Sorry if you think I was mis representing :-)
My point I was trying (in vain :-() to make was that the journalist
was there, he saw it happen and he is a real live journalist who
actually works
in a real live media company.

BTW- we did also agree there is nowhere on bali two people can get a 5

I did see the contract. It was definitely Randis guy. But half a milllion
is a lot of money in a country where the average wage is US$75 a month. I
agree there is no longer anywhere you can get a 5 star meal for 5 bucks any
more. Bali was triple the price of last time I was there.

The Balinese and those who have adopted it as their home country are some of
the friendliest people on earth. I have no personal issues with anyone
there, not even Alvin...(well there was some other YB idiot who made racist,
caste-related [how primitive] remarks a while back).
Thye just make silly claims. YB can claim they have 'won' the first battle
with Joko getting 'dropped' but the acid test is yet to come, and I have no
doubts what will happen when it does.

Big deal. I did that in massachusettes. 2 lobsters for $10 IIRC. Course you
had to add drinks to that, but pretty close.

Yeah, that was a plus. We were in stitches laughing at the fucked up accents.
We were betting each other on whether the next boston yankee we met would
