Many years ago, I took judo for a few years when I was a kid. Now, in
my 40's, I'm looking for the best defence techniques suitable for
folks in my age range.
I need a mainstream martial art form where I can find a dojo nearby
for instruction and practice. So, what discipline(s) would you
recommend?
A separate question I'm wondering about:
If you needed to "switch off" an individual with minimal or no
disturbance or noise, what methods would you use? I'm talking about a
hypothetical life/death situation -- the final condition of the target
is not important at all.
Sure appreciate any ideas and info.

Hi one.

A lot depends on where you live, how you live, and so forth. Judo is
a good start, why not go back to that? If you live in an area where
violence is really a problem, consider learning to use a weapon
(knife, gun) and carry that. Check out the laws in your area, of
course.

I would recommend you go around to all of the various schools in your
area and pick the one you like. Some schools/instructors are better
than others. Look for someplace that trains hard, involves real
sparring (with real contact, and at real speed) and takes a practical
approach to fighting.

Vulcan neck pinch.
Vulan neck pinch is for wussies. Photon torpedoes from high orbit,
it's the only way to be sure....

What part of "minimal or no disturbance or noise" do you not
understand?!?
<Bo>: As for the part of a weapon, all for that. Bias towards a simple
stick though. Never needs reloading, as a cane at least, it can be
carried almost anywhere & legally (except TX due to anti-club laws,
depending on type of stick).
The part quoted is what I'd have said too. Till the Vulcan nerve pinch
stuff, hehe. Well, there is Dim Mak I Suppose...
Silent way to take out an opponent, invisible, odorless sleeping gas
sprayed at them... ;-) Consult an Anistesiologist <sp?> I suppose...
