The 'decline' is more the let-down that the Judo world and its officialdom felt after the 1964
Olympics. Many 'marginal' sports get Olympic status and think that their sport will grow due to the
'increased interest'. Many discover that this 'increased interest' was only ever self-acclaimation.
And FWIW I'd dispute the claim that Judo was ever the most widespread martial art in the west,
either before or after 1964, or that good judo dojos are difficult to find in major cities.
Who's the author, Herb?
GDS
"Let's roll!"
Judo has declined somewhat from the heights of its popularity but it's
still easy to find a Judo dojo. Many Judoka feel that one of the elements
to the decline has been an over-emphasis on Olympic, "sport," style Judo
and its rules. However, they also recognize that Judo *MUST* have
competition in order to keep "real."
So, no, the author is truly stretching here.

TKD grew; but I think that was due more to good marketing and the fact BB
was given out in two years. Making instructors readily available.

I assume the author is Robert Dohenwend, the editor, since it is an
editorial in the magazine. However, there is a long list of contributing
editors also with considerable academic credentials behind their names. It
is a pretty good magazine; but mainly about karate and history of martial
arts.
The author cites no figures for his argument.
The reason I asked is that the only dojo that has closed in this city
recently was the Aikido and Judo dojo that had operated for 25 years. It had
horrible hours and would not teach children. Rather silly rules too. I took
Jodo there for 6 years and then was embarking on Iaido when one of the
instructors left. The other instructor was a shit head, so I left the dojo.
They made no attempt to keep their students are get new ones. It was really
a mismanaged dojo.
Not here. No commercial dojos in this city and we are a fair size one with a
large university - LSU.
See my answer to GDS.
The closest judo dojo is now one is in another state.

No disagreement from me.

I cannot tell. He cites no figures or authority on the " decline." I wonder
if there is a source?

Yes that, and the inability of many countries outside the usual suspects to win medals.

Judo is still extremely popular in Japan, Russia and France, but as far as total, active
participants over time, by country? No one's keeping composite, longitudinal research on this as far
as I know so the author's guess is as good as mine.

Bad schools will always fail eventually, no matter what ma is being taught. I think the popularity
of MMA has taken a HUGE hunk of students and revenue from almost every single ma. I'm still
staggered at the number of people who now know about it.
I have an old mate whose interest in and awareness of martial arts is close to zero. He knows I do
'stuff' but that's about it. So we're on the phone a few weeks ago (he's in another state) and he
says to me:
"Mate, I saw this thing on TV last night that I think you should watch. It's called, um, 'Fight Club
Ultimate' or something and it's crazy shit! Maybe you should quit doin' that stuff you do and try
this, cos these gays can FIGHT!"
"You don't mean the UFC do you?"
"Yeah, that's it! You should look it up!"
"I just might do that...thanks for the tip."

Yes, that's what I'm saying. There are fewer practicing Judoka now then
there were 40 or 50 years ago.
Still popular and widely available, but fewer then there were.

I've been quoted enrollment figures for three of the major orgs in the
U.S. and all of them show a drop in total membership numbers. That in
connection with the increase in over all population numbers in the U.S.
indicates a real decline. Not in danger of going extinct but not as
popular with the general population as it was in decades past. Numerous
reasons for this.
Dojo or club? Plenty of clubs that operate out of high school gyms, church
halls etc. I would bet money I could find one within an hours drive of you as
long as you don't live in the Sahara desert.

---there's a judo club there...
A club that occassionaly lives and dies. So small for a very large
unversity, it hardly breathes when it is in existence. Some years completely
non existent. Much like the fencing club. When I found them a place to exist
off campus a couple of years ago and they opened up to the general
population, they grew to a large club.
You need to try to quit telling people what exists where they live. I know
it is hard for a know it all like yourself; but it is stupid. A continual
conversation with shitheel would keep you occupied.
I used to belong to this club in the early 1970s when a grad student. It was
not much then; and it is still not much.
When Heyung Kimm opened a commercial dojo in the 1970s it thrived.
Unfortunately, he switched to Hapkido and then his own system HanMudo. Much
more lucrative for him though.
The university will not permit any private pay instructors on campus. That
protects the yos yos they have there, who are usually not very good. Kind of
like govt health care.
Any questions?

Who knows how many judo dojos there are in major cities. Where I live
there seems to be a small judo dojo in every small village though.
Since when are there any legit commercial judo dojo anywhere?
Neil
Judoka have never had much problem with competition. It's just that the Olympics have been responsible for changing the rules and
therefore much of the flavour of judo.
Do you know there are some competition dojo that train minimal or no ukemi and ne-waza? A good breakfall is just a signal to the
judge that you got thrown, and you'll get stood up fast anyways so no need to train for the ground...

---My main club had a lack of Yudansha to train with, I usually ended up
being over matched in age *and* experience....however, I did ok within
my category.....over 40 gokyus!
---The Dimbulb will find that irrelevant, since they don't make a ton of
money.....
What is perfectly clear is that you dont know shit about this area and dont
know what you are yapping about.
No it makes you look brainless.

What they dont have is a shitasses like you.
You just love to stalk me dont you? How flattering to see a fool like you
waste all that time. Get a life.
The Herb will find it irrelevant because he doesn't live in such a
city. In fact he doesn't live outside of the US. No, sir, there be
giants and monsters and maybe even a muslim or three outside of the
US.
Therefore any data from outside of the US extreme right media or his
own mental Herbistan are incorrect, fraudulent lies that are just not
true. Or relevant to his interests.
No, it's a recreational club so shiai really isn't the focus. I have suggested that they run a special class once in a while for
people who are interested, so far they ran one but I wasn't able to attend. Actually at this stage I'd like to get some seminar
time in for learning to ref but that doesn't seem to get organized anywhere - they just expect you to absorb it somehow by osmosis
and then try your hand starting with the kids.
I do run shiai keiko in my kendo club, we'll do one or two classes devoted to it. We spar all the time so that's not the issue -
it's more, what are the ref's commands, how does the scoring work, what's the etiquette, watch out for these penalties, etc.

PS, the Saskatchewan Open is coming up the 30th this month, I'll let you know how my son and I did. Last year the only other guy in
my division was godan, he creamed me.
----Well, gosh, Dim, a little white girl's not askeered to go to the NO
Judo club...why are you?

------Shitasses for a shithole, Dim....
----Glad to see you admit it, Dim...you're also a poser...
But that is a matter of choice. You, on
> the other hand, have no choice. You are stupid and will remain so.
----And the "stupid" one outed you as a liar and a poser....What does
that make you, Dim? Sub idiot?
---OK, great...
Last year the only other guy in
> my division was godan, he creamed me.
----HaHa! Sounds like my shiais.....the only 40+ gokyu in the room!
----Nah, an inconsequential dummy like you takes up very little time...
Get a life.
---Says the guy whose whole life is RMA.....
----He thinks there's monsters and such outside of Bumfukt LA, never
mind outside the US....
I am a yudansha judoka and jujutsuka with over 35 years experience. 2
years at Kodokan 1983-85. those are my credentials.
When JK first became interested in judo becoming an olympic 'sport' he
voiced concern over whether or not the 'foreigners' would understand
it. indeed over 50 years on now, it has changed in practice, from
being a martial art/physical and mental improvement system, to, yes,
just another 'sport'...that you can 'play'!!!
For those of us that prefer the original intentions, aspects and
traditions of judo, this is quite sad. As a self defense system judo
has lost out to more commercially astute ma's who push the self
defense aspect of their ma's. Furthermore many judo teachers nowadays
have only a minimal knowledge of self defense anyway,
I'd like to see judo get back to it's original intentions
again...there has to be room for olympic style comp judo AND self
defense judo...but I am pessemistic about that happening. I myself
still drill self defense...and enjoy copious amounts of
groundwork...and with other consenting old stock) BBs we''ll include
some Kosen judo too...aswell as leglocks, neck cranks, back
cranks...etc etc.
also it's nice to practice 'illegal' throws. in a real fight they
might make a big difference!
judo has lost many potential fighters/students to bjj and other ma's.
that's the facts.
sad tho
----I've found that kawazu gake is more potentally harmful to tori than
uke....

----Yes, that's one of a few reasons I don't play anymore, but mostly
the result of nagging injuries.....wanted to get deeper into the art,
learn and practice all the throws, along with experimenting with SD
applications devoid of gripping rules and the like....but everyone's
interested only in competition......
Why would I even care that they existed. The are 200 miles away from me,
moron.
Which is why you live where you do.
