Surreal Steel vs. the TrailBastard
Cold Steel TrailBastard cut in two - actual video documentation!
$20: approx 25minutes

I've got an oxy/acetylene torch that will cut a Trail Master in half, but it
won't hold an edge worth a darn! :-) Who makes SurrealSteel? Sounds like
something you'd find on a Jefferson Airplane album.
- Mike
Heh. I like the name "TrailBastard" even better than the "Buttmaster" of
previous quasi-flamage.
Don't get me wrong: I love my Trailmaster. (How else will I fight off
beer-stealing grizzlies?) It's just too damned heavy to carry in the
winter.
Marketing hype makes more money and with much less effort!

There's a real rumor that the key to the performance of SurrealSteel is a high
Unobtainanium Carbide content and a trace of Mithril.

Favorite comment I once saw on this board:
"When I hear of patents and "miracle" steels, I think:
CHEESEY PRODUCT AHEAD."
Thank you for the wide array of comments; your strawmen most effectively
destroyed.
Anybody seen the video yet?

RE: Why? Think about it a little bit and you SHOULD BE ABLE to tell
the differance between BS and fact.

Some people cannot tell the difference between real life and satire.
The original post was very clearly satirical and intended to amuse and
not delude. The most amusing aspect was, IMO, that someone could have
not seen this.

Are you talking about our Brian?
:-)
Sorry.

I do not know where you got the idea that I was a kind and thoughtfull
person......but I do not confirm nor deny that I am. I usually leave
things like that to others to decide.
And as for an IQ of 130....well , I suppose it depends on the testing
method and scale used. Anyway, I do not think a high IQ was required
to see that the "Surrealsteel" post was a joke...just a reasonably
well developed sense of humour. I mean...it was not even subtle.
And if you cannot make fun of the slow-witted, whom can you make fun
of (smiles).

And what, exactly, is that supposed to mean ?
Which part is the hardest to believe ....the kind and thoughtfull or
the IQ of 130 ?
Brian
>But along with I.Q. do you test for the "prick" factor?
Yes....and I am afraid that, today, I have been scoring much higher
than I feel comfortable with.
Sorry if I have offended anyone.

Hi Karma:
Sorry- I've been away doing shows and working in the studio and haven't
responded to your e-mail. Nobody else wanted the tape so I didn't worry
about it.
The tape has been around for a while. Judd Evans (whose name 'Surreal
Steel' is about his art and architectural work) and Steve Gartin
(Sporting Blades mag, Spyderco, Benchmade, Western Cutlery) took the
'Cold Steel Challenge'(tm).
No wedge grind, no funny claims of superior steel; just good old
fashioned know-how and craft. They found the 'challenge'(tm) just a
little insulting and pompous and did something about it. We all know
that 'Cold Steel'(tm) makes a reasonably good knife for the money, it's
just that the 'Cold Steel Challenge'(tm) is such a fatuous fart.
I have made my address available to any number of people who sell things
as well as give them away as part of the Prairie Arts League (a local
non-profit group of artists). I have viewed the tape and find it
credible. The standards of the testing seemed to me to be fair and
impartial and responsive to the 'Cold Steel Challenge'(tm). Further, as
I understand it, the test can be repeated at any time or place financed
by the requesting party.
As Mr. Gartin makes the copies available, I will personally give you a
copy to make up for any inconvenience that you may have suffered. Mr.
Thompson of Cold Steel(tm) received a copy some years ago as did the
mags, it is not unknown to them. Perhaps the fact that any good
bladesmith can take the 'Cold Steel Challenge'(tm) is not of interest to
purveyors who provide knives for millions of people. I found it
refreshing.
As for the clowns that made uninformed, self-serving, poorly and
un-founded remarks; your research and analytical skills are compared
favorably only with your service to your ricebowl.

As one of those who posted putdowns on this subject I wish to
apologise and explain.
In fact, my attitude was formed in response to a post on another forum
on the same subject.....not your message offering tapes. I actually
did not see your original message and mistakenly and stupidly thought
that the other item had been crossposted to rec.dot knives. My server
sometimes misses days' worth ng listings. I have since found it using
Dejanews.
The post on the other forum (wish I could find it again) was written
rather poorly and DID read as though it a satirical poke at Cold
Steel.....it was not, IMO, believable as presented. Apparently it was
factual.
Your post was entirely lucid and credible...I wish I had seen it in
time to save me from another humiliation at my own hand.
Brian
Cutup. What's it to ya? VT the slowest on r.k and Alvin the next to
the slowest on r.k don't mind why should you? :(

I had not known that there was some sort of parody regarding the same
subject.
I apologize if I jumped too quickly.
The 25+- min. video had been shown at the Shot Show and complementary
copies had been made available to the rest of the media and so on. It
simply was not offered for viewing by the public in their homes so as to
make the judgement for themselves.
I am dismayed by the number of aficionados who swallow the ad biz hype
and the number of purveyors that would say anything in public that sold
more knives and filled their rice bowl. We are an industry that depends
on integrity and honesty or just about anything we do could be fulfilled
with a pack of Schick razor blades. Anytime someone is dissatisfied,
they will tell the story for the next ten years.
'Oooh, let's sweep *this* under the rug' does our industry no service.
