My wife recently saw a set of Cutco knives in a friend's kitchen, and was
very impressed with the quality and feel of those knives. Upon inquiry, we
found that the gallery set cost hundreds of dollars. Does anyone have a
recommendation of a similar quality of knife at a reasonable price? Thanks
so much in advance, and please reply to rfdi...@hal-pc.org. Thanks so
much!

reccomend Victorinox line of kitchen knives. Inexpensive, good quality, and sharp.

I got to test A.G. Russell's Kitchen knife series at a time when I
also had a couple of Cutcos, several Forschner's, some Henckels,
Mundials and a few Tramontinas in the house. To my tastes the A.G.
Russell's Kitchen knives are the best of the lot. They're thin, light,
hold an edge pretty well and unlike cutcos, the handles won't
spontaneously combust if left in proximity of a stove burner. (Not
that I'm recommending that practice, but Cutco used to use something
reportedly very similar to nitrocellulose in their handles. After one
of mine snapped off at the handle for no apparent reason, I tried a
little experiment on the handle and was pretty shocked at how quickly
it ignited and how hard it was to put out.) Aside from all that
trivia, I never did feel like the Cutco blade steel merited all the
hype and expense. When a carver simply snapped one day with no real
abuse or reason, it pretty much hammered home the point that I don't
think much of Cutcos.

There's been a lot of talk about Cutco's on this group in the past.
You might wish to do a Google Group search for this group with Cutco
as the search parameter.

Or you might just want to go to this site and see if these suit your
fancy and pocketbook a little better:

I like those knives a lot and one doen't have to buy a whole set,
though even the price for a complete set with a really well designed
butcher block is still only about $200. Individually, they're quite
affordable and are in my opinion better knives than many costing lots
more.

I hope that I will not make anyone mad by posting this, because I am a
Cutco rep, but for the record it is illegal for Cutco reps to sell
online, so I am not trying to sell anything; I am just trying to be
helpful.

Richard, just so that you know, you can buy Cutco knives individually,
as well. If you really want a set, ask about the "trade-in."

Good luck finding what you're looking for!!

Illegal? How so?

Mike,
Did you know that you can send your Cutco knife back and they will
replace it for free? That sucks that it broke, but you should at least
get it replaced, since that guarantee is part of why they aren't
cheap. :o)

It's not illegal, just frowned upon by Cutco.

In Europe, it's even uncertain if such a rule wouldn't _itself_ be
illegal, as a restraint on trade. It would depend on the relationship
between Cutco and Cutco reps (if they're employees, which I doubt,
then it's OK to control what an employee may do).

By contract, presumably, as the reps will have been required to sign
something to that effect.

Now, how could ANYONE ever get mad at Dennis The Menace's mother? The woman
is a saint.

(sorry, couldn't resist) ;-)

It does seem curious, doesn't it? Why not explore another method of sales
promotion? The internet has so many enemies. I've always marveled at it.

I can see it now; Cutco pop-under ads under all those damned web
camera pop-under ads.

My experience with Cutco Knives: I met my late husband in 1960 when he was representing Cutco (selling door to door). He had the complete sales rep set including the utility dipper, slotted spoon, forks, etc. along with the wall holders and sharpener. I still have all these items (except one I lost) here in 2020. About 2 years ago I sent them back to Cutco to be revitalized by cleaning and sharpening. They even replaced the 1020 paring that I had lost free of charge. I did pay for the shipping to them but they paid the return shipping. I have raised a big family and then some in these past 60 years with my Cutco Buddies and I wouldn't take anything for them. They are much more expensive today, of course, but they will give you a lifetime of use, plus they are beautifully made! Thank you Cutco for making my life easier for so many years!
