When I was about 14
I borrowed my dad's big penknife. The very same day, it fell out my back pocket in the woods and I lost it. My dad was cool about it and he bought me a new knife the next week. We went to the fishing tackle shop and I got to choose it. It was a great knife, dark wood handles, 2 blades, one large... more »

...Iron is the only one that changes crystal pattern in such a way to make room for carbon to fit into the newly formed "open spaces" when it's heated and then when the iron is cooled will trap(!) the little suckers. And it isn't just carbon that fits into those spaces, so does boron, phosphorus and nitrogen. Case hardening compounds usually have all... more »

Mohs scale of hardness can kick the bucket.
...Notice the line where it says a file is 6.5 but the table just below it says steel can be "8". Off hand, a file is the hardest piece of steel that is "common". ~67hrc from my testing. The table looks right to me in the area around glass and quartz since some of my heat and cold treated knife blades can scratch... more »

Phil Hartsfield blades
I have 2 swords, a Shinobi and a Katana that were given to me. I am looking for anyone who has ideas what would be the best way to sell them. I am told by the original buyer that the Shinobi cost him $3-4,000 and the Katana was between $4-5,000 when he had them made by Phil back 20 years ago. How would I price them?... more »

Grinder 4.5" vs. 5"
My local Canadian Tire is selling off a 5" 12 Amp angle grinder grinder for $70. It seems too good to miss. However, I already have three 4.5" grinders (two of them from CT also for ridiculous prices). Before I yield to the sale fever, I thought I would ask: What will a 5" grinder do that 4.5" will not?... more »

Casting and rubber molds
I was gong to try casting some small objects using epoxy (of which I have a bucketful). I was thinking possibly knife handles etc. in future. I thought I would try a rubber mould. Being cheap, I bought a couple of tubes of silicone caulking from Home Depot (rather than 2 lb minimum of the proper stuff that sculptors use). I read somewhere that silicone does not... more »
