In the Jakarta Post of yesterday (12/09/2002), the following news was
presented:

[Sari Madjid] will also announce to the international kite community that in
Southeast Sulawesi a cave with pictures of kites on its walls has been
discovered.
The cave needs further study, but unfortunately Indonesia has yet to find a
kite researcher.

I've spent some time trying to obtain background info on the cave painting.
If this painting is authentic, it is likely made by the Austronesians who
some 5000 - yes, five thousand - years ago passed through the region.

Very exiting, can't wait to see some of the pics Wolfgang Bieck made!!!!

After reading the article I again start wondering why Mr Takakuwa is getting
so much nonsens (or no respons at all) when he is trying to pop a question
on this list, especcially on the 8th of sept.this year. That time I was
close to ask if the replys he got was some sort of "mutual male pre 11.09
PMS reaction", but then I managed to keep my mouth shut- or did I ..?

Heidi, That may have been me.... I honestly thought his mail server was
stuttering, and sending the same question over and over again... He
mailed me off list and said it was only sent once, with no replies... I
did a google search as I was SURE it had been posted several times and
was gonna cut and paste them all to him..... Lo and behold, I found
nothing....
Maybe I was just Thinking the same thing over and over again????
I think I'm going bonkers....
I really neeeeed to get out and fly a fighter/ buggy foil/ SLK/ dual or
quad line stunt kite/ kite ski (nawww, too early for that even in the
middle of minnesota)

Only minutes ago I downloaded the latest issue of Kite Journal (Fall 2002)
by the Drachen Foundation. On page 18 it publishes an - anonimous - article
on the Muna Cave Painting. In the end this article states: "With Indonesia
dominated by Islam, further forays to Muna are for the time being obviously
not in order for Westerners. So there the matter of the mystery kite image
rests for the foreseeable future."

Living in "The axes of evil/terorism" for several years now, I don't know
whether to laugh or cry over this display of utter ignorance about Indonesia
and Islam! In a single xenophobic sentence, Drachen Foundation manages to
insult a religion, a country and every westerner who "dares" to travel
through Indonesia!

I've been pondering more angry ravings on this topic. But these redneck
idiots don't even deserve the lines I wrote above! Oh well, I'll probably
never learn.

HI All,
I have not read the article yet and I do not subscribe to these thoughts but I
do think it would be proper to address your "angry ravings" to Drachen as well.
Unfortunately
these oversights due occur in written material.
Most North Westerners are not "rednecks"
many of us would jump at the chance to travel to Indonesia and especially to
see the caves.
Email Drachen with your concerns, I don't think they look at rec.kites and it
would be helpful for them to know there are people who take umbrage with these
issues.
