Keep It Up
This message comes from an Easterner who has flown in Montery. It has
an interesting story attached:
Back in 1992 we had flown to San Diego and began a two week excursion
up the California coast. On a particular Saturday we had been flying
down at Santa Barbara and then headed up through Big Sur to spend the
night in Monterey. We got up early on Sunday and stopped by Windborne
kites on Cannery Row. Purchased a big single line delta and inquired
as to where to fly. We were given directions to Monterey Beach, where
you should fly...it's THE place to fly in Monterey and brings out the
best of the best....if you read on.
We got to the beach, saw a couple of guys flying dual line kites and
set up our Top of the Line Spin-off's. Started flying them when this
wild looking guy with long hair and a bushy moustache came over and
informed us that we couldn't fly here. When we asked why, he simply
said that we were a bit too close to the other flyers and should move
a another section of the beach. The beach and dunes are carved out in
semi-circular pods, offering each flyer there own piece of privacy and
safety. Began talking with him and found out he was COREY JENSEN, then
head buckaroo of Windborne kites and former AKA president (of course
he was too modest to mention either of these titles and we only found
out who he REALLY was a year later when ready a copy of the AKA
magazine).
As you probably know, Corey (core...@aol.com) is perhaps the leader
of the buggy movement in North America, if not the world (Peter Lynn
is THE traction leader!). The day we met him he was unpacking a huge
two line para-stunter that he had just received from Germany. We now
feel that were possibly witness to the conception and birth of
traction kiting in the U.S. Who knows?
Enjoy your time in Monterey, and hopefully you too may meet a legend
in our sport!
Good winds,
Bob Hogan

Dear Jim,
The Monterey Bay is blessed with many fine flying fields. Here are a
few of my favorites:
Carmel Beach (Straight down Ocean Avenue to the shore. Lots of dogs
but polite owners. Slightly narrow, but good wind and a great view of
Pebble Beach Golf Course)
Seascape Resort Beach (Up towards Aptos. Take the courtesy shuttle
down to the beach from the resort. Miles of pristine beach will reward
you. Nice place for a liquid refreshment or lunch)
Manresa Beach (La Selva Beach)
New Brighton Beach (Aptos)
And of course, my personal favorite, Natural Bridges Beach in Santa
Cruz.
