I have seen two different wind brakes available locally. The first is
locally called a "wind tamer" and consists of a retangular piece of
fiberglass screening that is stretched between the bridle attachment
points. The second is a triangular piece of fabric that is attached
to the back of the kite. It is connected between the end of the
standoffs and the spine of the kite.
Both slow the kite down, decreasing the pull and extending the upper
wind range.
Wind Tamers are made by Dave Simpson and are available directly from
Dave and from many kite shops.

Novice question for the day:
I understand why the kite slows down, but why does a wind break
decrease the pull of the kite and why does it increase the upper
range?

A kites pull is due to two forces, the drag on the kite, and the lift
generated by the kite. For the most part, most of the pull from a
stunt kite is due to the lift on the kite. Ever noticed that when the
kite is sitting still, stalled, that it doesn't pull as much as when
it is moving forward?
So, if you slow a kite down, the apparent wind (the vector sum of the
actual wind and the velocity of the kite) will be less, the kite will
generate less lift, and less pull. Since there is less pull on the
kite, the kite in general is under less stress
Let's say that the kite has a maximum top speed of 20 mph. When you
fly it in wind higher than that, the frame bends like crazy and
eventually breaks. When you add the wind tamer the stress on the frame
is less. Flying the kite in 20 mph with the tamer stresses the kite
the same as flying it in 15 mph (just an example). In order to stress
the frame with the tamer the same as without the tamer requires a
higher wind speed.

One variant of the second device that Marty mentions is called a 'Bikini
Brake' and it's handled by Chicago Fire Kite Co. Check with your local
dealer, and/or I can get them for you..

In a perfect system, wouldn't the lift would be a vector perpendicular
to the wind vector? In which case, wouldn't it *not* add to the force
that the wind is generating? I guess since the kite flies in a
"spehere", some of that lift is turned into pull since the kite lines
are making the kite move out of the path it wants to travel, but it
seems to make sense that if you hold a board against wind, the point
at which the board would push me the hardest is when it is
perpendicular to wind.
Although, you are correct when you say that when the kite is in a
stall, it is pulling the least. So much for my physics knowledge...

The triangular piece of fabric used as the wind break are called "Drag-on's"
and have a picture silk-screened on them of a "Dragon". They look the best
of the two mentioned here. (IMHO) They can be bought through the people
who have a patent on them and at a good price. Call "BO's" Kites. The
phone number is in the magazines. If you can't find it then let me know
and I will bring it from home.

Think about it this way. The wind blows at 10 miles an hour. The kite
(as an example) is moving at 30 miles an hour in the 10 mph wind. The
apparent wind is the vector sum of the two velocities, which will be
at least 30 mph.
The lift of the kite's surface is a force vector. A component of the
force contributes to the kite's forward movement. The rest of the lift
contributes to the pull.

hear your comments on my ideas.
When a kite is not moving (stalled) a "wedge" of air with a higher
than normal pressure will be formed in front of the sail. This wedge
will make the wind to flow around the kite (it must since it can't
flow trough it). The pull will be determined (roughly) by the
pressure in this wedge. The air closest to the skin will actually not
move very much.
When the kite is moving it will constantly fly into air that is
moving. The fact that the air is moving close to the skin too will
build up a higher pressure than when the air flows around the kite.
Thats why a kite on the move pulls harder.
If my explanation is hard to understand, consider this situation, that
is similar:
A helicopter is hovering at one point. It will be hovering in a cloumn
of air that is rushing towards ground because the propeller forces it
that way. When the helicopters starts to move forward, it will leave
the column and enter air that is still, and the lift will increase.
OK, OK, I know, this is wild, and most likely wrong but if some one
could explain to me why, it would be appreciated.
