I'm contemplating my first juggling equipment purchase (unless cloth and
birdseed count) and I would like some feedback from other jugglers.

Are there any good juggling clubs out there for under $20? I'd like
something that I could work up to five clubs with, and something that
would last through a lot of drops in practice, and yet easy(ish) on my
wallet. I'm contemplating the eclipse clubs

Are one-piece plastic clubs any good for numbers juggling?

Since I usually juggle outdoors in the windy desert, I'm thinking of
getting some Phat Rings. Has anyone else tried these, and are they worth
the extra price, or should I just tape two normal rings together and thus
get the extra weight and thickness cheaper?
http://www.jugglingstore.com/store/details.aspx?ID=492 And are they good
for numbers (I'm thinking of getting five)

Also, are stage balls any good for technical juggling? I'd like something
I can wash off ofter dropping on the germy sidewalks in town, so I can
leave my precious beanbags at home.

Thank you,

D.D.

Gives me an error.

Plenty of pros use stageballs.

If you're looking into the $15 range or so for clubs, you might want to
check out airflites. Personally I find two-piece clubs much nicer, but if
you want to get a one-piece you should at least get one with a good weight
(you pretty much always want a club to be heavier than 200 grams, and the
eclipse clubs you linked to are only 198). If you're willing to spend a
bit more, Henrys Delphins (jugglingstore.com has them) are around $22, and
undecorated Renegades are $25.

The "wind rings" are only useful for bouncing, they don't do much about
wind at all. Just juggle rings inside or on non-windy days.

I'd recommend against getting one-piece clubs. Lots of people get them
and then find that they just don't like juggling them; they hurt their
hands, or don't have the right balance, or whatever. Invest in multi-
piece clubs. There are even some that are relatively cheap; the Beard
Circus Specials run from $18-20 depending on where you buy them, and
are perfectly fine beginner clubs. They're certainly not the best, but
if you want something for under $20, they're perfectly serviceable
multi-piece juggling clubs.

For some reason, they're just listed as "Circus Clubs" without a brand
name on jugglingstore.com, but I got a set of three of these as my
first set of clubs for Christmas once, and they've served me well:
http://www.jugglingstore.com/store/detail.aspx?ID=231

Oh, by the way, a word of advice. If you're planning on getting more
than 3 clubs, you should just go all the way to 6 at least. You're
going to want to pass with them at some point, and it's generally a
pain to have to mix sets of clubs, or find out that your partner
didn't bring clubs because they expected you to have six. The same
applies to rings as well; if you just have 5, you're going to kick
yourself when you decide you want to try passing rings, and don't have
a set of 6.

Definitely spend the extra few dollars and get Delphins. They're great
clubs for all skill levels and will last you a long time. You'll be glad
you did!

I highly suggest MB flip clubs
(http://www.homeofpoi.com/shop/productDetails/MB-Flip-juggling-
club). They are cheap multi-piece clubs and they juggle nicely. You want
want to replace the screws in
the knobs, but that's not a big deal.

As for the rings, just accept that you will never be able to juggle them
outside. The sooner you get
that the better you'll probably be. :) That said, passing rings (or wind
rings I guess) are much more
comfortable to use. Holding three in one hand is a bit difficult, but it
can be done.

Don't buy stage balls unless you are willing to chase them into the
streets. When dropped they will
attempt to get lost in anyway possible. Consider trying to make some
russians. They aren't nearly as
bad about dissapearing.

Good luck.

If you're looking for good, yet cheap clubs to buy, the Delphins are the
best bet in my opinion. They've been quite durable for me. They're just a
touch over $20, but are great to juggle.

If instead you're very serious about saving $$, consider these:
http://kingstonjugglers.org/gcp/ We had a whole workshop on making them
at the USD Juggling Festival a few weeks back and I was really impressed
with how well they juggle and how durable they seemed to be. Very cheap to
make, and pretty easy (though the handle is a little bit tricky). Not only
that, but for a particularly crafty person, I reckon you could even pretty
them up enough to perform with.

Airflights are good and durable, I do lots of bounce tricks with them,
indoors and out, and they hardly
have any damage. They are usually around $13-$17 depending on who you go
to. I like them they
might hurt your hands at first and their handles are big but I can do five
clubs with them (and
probably six) so if you don't have small hands like I do then you won't
have a problem. I hope this
helps with the clubs!

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'll forgoe the fatrings for ordinary
ones, and I can try doubling them if its breezy out and I'm too stubborn
to give up juggling at the time, plus, they will be good for the 'magic
color change'.

With clubs, I'm indecided about whether to get airflights or delphins.
The airflites sound tougher, which will be a good thing out in the desert
(though not so much for my hands), while the delphins sound easier to
juggle. But one of the customer comments on jugglingstore.com made it
sound as if the elphins fall apart rather easily, and I've found that
things deteriorate extra fast here in the desert. So I'm leaning toward
airflites. I'm planning on making my purchase early next week some time,
so that gives me several more days of delicious agony. Wish me luck and
happiness on my first juggling equipment purchase :-)

What is it with this crazy Delphin / PX3 obsession?

Do people really enjoy juggling clubs which are: cheap, bendy, rip-offed
designed, gimmicky, stupidly
proportioned, toylike or some combination of these elements?

Why do all the cool European circus school kids use them? Because they are
poor broke students who
can't afford proper tools (I mean, who spend all their money on pizzas and
plastic guitars).

I always assumed the reason for their prevalance at WJF events is that
their inherent badness makes
them harder to juggle, thus assuring extra points. Doesn't a 5 club move
with broken and rattling
Delphins, or a 3 club combo with bendy plastic-dowelled PX3s rate 0.2
points higher than if you did it
with Renegades or Henry's Pirouettes? It should do.

It's all part of the conspiracy. Uniforms in country colours? JUST SO THAT
TOBY WALKER HAS TO WEAR
GREEN. Which as any fule kno, is an unlucky colour to wear on stage. Oh
wait, it's not a stage. Except,
it is performing routined juggling in front of people who are watching.
Who are an audience. So it is a
show. Except it isn't. Wait, now I'm confused.

Anyway, before you know it people will be looking for even stupider clubs
to use, to score even higher
points. Just wait for the day when you see someone at WJF with ridiculous
Dubé Airflite clubs. Oh wait,
hang on. What?

Well, I feel better now, and may even be able to resist writing on those
"other" threads...

Well, since I half filled mine with Russian salt from the the seas of
Japan, they are GREAT!

They don't wobble when I throw them, they don't roll away if they drop,
and my pasta tastes better
than ever.

They are the best.

I finally made up my mind and mailed my order to jugglingstore.com today.
I ordered 12 rings, 6 each of red and yellow for doubling. I'll see if I
ever get enough calm weather to learn six rings. Unlikely, but I'm an
optimist ;-) I ordered 6 airflite clubs (2 each red yellow and green) and
seven red Play Juggling stage balls. I'll be sure to let y'all know how
they work out when I get them. DD (impatiently
waiting: it's been three hours so far . . .)
