Dutch Juggling Convention 2008 HLGCB

I just got back from the NJF and one way I judge how much fun I had at
any particular fest is how long it takes me to recover after I
return. By that standard, the Dutch Fest was rocking, because I'm
still a mess. My classes this week have sucked! I've been passing
out at 5pm everyday after I get home from school. Ahhh, it was
glorious. I highly recommend it.
Dutch Convention HLGCBS
High(s): Just getting to see Holland, learn some Dutch, and
experience the Dutch juggling scene.
MC’ing Renegade on Friday night and having it go well with some great
acts
The “Fuck You” tricks at Renegade. Totally spontaneous and fun!
True Renegade.
Drinking with Martijn, Sytse, Ceri-Anne and the rest of the crew
after Renegade. Stories and language swapping! Sjonnie and
Anita!!!! Kegels!! Vogelbekdier!
All the workshops going well, especially my new split of the
multiplex workshop into two parts (much better)
Basically all day Saturday with Stefan at the Parade was a high.
Parades in Europe rock, and so does Stefan!
Getting folks interested in kendama and seeing people have fun with
it. EJC Kendama Open baby!!!!
Hanging out in the upstairs canteen with folks during meal times
Going grocery shopping with Robert, Declan, and co.
Cigar Box jamming several times with Robert and my long-lost pal
Cristoph (who has gotten really good!)
Learning some new tricks from Martijn, Stefan, and Christoph—thanks
guys!
Performing in the public show with some monster acts. Really hot
show! I loved pretty much every act.
Hitting the 75751/97531 combo and the b633633 Machine on the first
try in the second Public Show
Low(s): Scratching my head during the battle against that freakin’
kid on Saturday night.
My performance at the Opening Show
Way too many drops in both public shows (even though it's a new
routine, I lost mental focus…grrr)
Goal(s): Learn some Dutch
Try a lot of new food and drink
Learn some new tricks
Get to know some Internet friends in person
Teach some good workshops
Debut the new ball routine
Basically all goals achieved except for the performance aspect, which
at best would be a half-check.
Crush(es): Too many to name, as everyone was so nice and fun.
However, I will single out Niels Duinker for being a PERFECT host for
the whole festival. I can’t count the number of times he went out of
his way to do something nice for me, often without being asked. Also,
I will mention Stefan Paridaen, who I had not seen since EJC 2003.
He’s gotten really good, and we re-started our friendship like
Svenborg was yesterday, not five years ago. Lastly, I will mention
the festival organizers who worked their ASSES off and pulled off a
great convention. The y made it easy for me to concentrate on the
festival. NJF is definitely one of my favorites—I haven’t felt this
close to the EJC Svendborg feeling in a long time…great job guys.
Bane(s):
Two public shows with 110 or so people in one show and 90 people in
the second show with a theater that seats 350.
Public show on the last day meaning I couldn’t really party the night
before

High: 5 days instead of the normal 4 days, Matt Hall being there, positive
reactions on the games Ward and I hosted, the great people being there,
the beer, Guido hosting the public show: really funny, the last night with
Stefan, Gregor being there, the icecream car, drinking some beers with
Matt Hall and sharing the renegade stage with him a few times, the weather
the last couple of days
Low: freezing my ass of during the nights, apparently there were some
locals causing some trouble, my birthday being the day after the
convention (or the convention being to short?)
Goal: hosting some nice games, having lots of fun with good and new
friends, having some fun on the renegade stage.. CHECK!
Crush: Matt Hall, Andrea's cape (scarf)
Bane: the lack of a big party the last night, the crooked pool table,
Sander not getting there on time for the first public show
Surprise: the high level in the public show with a lot of performers I
didn't know of, Joost picking up the phone (being in Canada) and giving a
speech to the audience during renegade, me hosting the games with a
microphone in front of 200+ people and I didn't really srew up badly,
Gregor showing up, Matt Hall coming up to me: I already know who you are
and I like the videos you guys make.
I had a really great convetion, big thanks to the organisers who worked
really hard during the convention!

was a lot of fun.
Low - only being able to attend 1 day out of a 5 day convention.
Goals - have fun, learn something new, play some combat (all done)
Crush - Renegade with Matt as a host, it really reminded me of the
renegades in Svendborg and Bremen.
Bane - it being such a small convention this year (about 250-300
attendees?), especialy since it was one of the best NJF's I've been to.
Thanks to the organizing commitee, you did a great job.
