Unicycle Quidditch?

In some ways, the juggling community reminds me of JK Rowling's wizarding
community: we learn cool skills that can be pretty magic, we have a few
"celebrities" that we all know, but that non-jugglers have never heard of,
and there's even a couple of schools dotted around here and there. I've
heard non-jugglers referred to as "muggles", which always amuses me. Only
difference is, we can't ride flying broomsticks ... but we can ride
unicycles.

Here's an idea: Unicycle Quidditch. I'd love to see this, and I'd love to
play. It's an idea I've been toying with for a while, but I could never
think of what to have instead of Bludgers, and how to work the golden
Snitch. But I got bored at work today, and here are my ideas:

Three Chasers on each team pass an ordinary football / basket ball
(preferably red) to each other, and score goals by throwing it through
hoops / goalposts. These should be fairly easy to make.

One Keeper on each guards the goalposts and tries to stop the other team
scoring.

Two Beaters on each team have hockey sticks intead of bats, and there are
two hockey balls representing the Bludgers, which the Beaters aim at the
wheels of the other team's players to knock them off. (Or alternatively
the Beaters could have poi and try to knock the other players off with
those ... or maybe just play unicycle gladiators, but that might get a bit
out of hand.) If a Chaser in possession of the Quaffle gets knocked off
their Unicycle, they must drop the Quaffle immediately. They aren't
allowed to pass it, as passing is only allowed when you are on a unicycle.

The Snitch is a small ball that is thrown back and forth across the pitch
by the spectators, but at intervals rather than constantly. The Seekers
aren't allowed to hover, they must be moving at all times, so that they
can't cheat by hovering next to whoever happens to be holding the Snitch.
The Seekers must catch the Snitch when it's airborne, and aren't allowed
to pick it up off the floor if it gets dropped.

Does anybody else want to play this, or have any other ideas about how it
might work? It'd be great to get some teams together and have a Unicycle
Quidditch Tournament at the BJC. Just thought I'd put the idea out there
..

IIRC it's been played at BUC and SWUM in the past. I can't remember
whether I've played or not - if I have, it was only once and quite a few
years ago.

Even with magic quidditch is an incredibly stupid game. Without magic it
is even worse.

Please don't associate jugglers with Harry Potter or JK Rowling. The only
way it can be taken is as a pejorative.

Yeah, associate jugglers with clowns, in the circus, where it belongs!

(I don't actually have a strong opinion here. I associate jugglers with
juggling, that that's enough for me.)

Sounds fun! An aerial group at our circus center plays Quidditch on lyras
and fabrics...it could just as easily be played on unicycles.

The snitch would be incredibly difficult to catch...but then again, that's
the point.

The bludgers could be dodge balls that get thrown at the Chasers...I mean,
this game is meant to be brutal, after all. Maybe you could make a rule
that you don't aim at people's heads.

As Danny said, there's an established ruleset for this which would make
a good starting point if you're thinking of it.

However, that's not why I'm posting.

I saw this post on retronaut yesterday:
http://retronaut.co/2012/02/adverts-from-playboy-november-and-december-1962

It's the adverts from a 1962 edition of Playboy (don't worry, it's safe
for work) and includes an advert for a company that sells unicycles and
polo kits.

So, my question is - does anyone know how popular unicycle polo was in
1962?

Yeahhh, screw the mainstream. I hate successful things and all the added
fan based creativity that comes from that. Grrrrr.

I don't, but if I had to guess, I'd date this clip at early-mid '70s, and
it features uni polo.

Wow! Is there anything you don't have a video of on juggling.tv?

I quite liked the Harry Potter series. Good on JK Rowling for her
success, and the enjoyment she has given fans. But quidditch is still an
incredibly stupid game.
It's basically the same as two people playing hide and seek, while their
friends play a game of contact netball without keeping score. But without
the hiding.

Mat Ricardo, for one, as I just told him on Twitter.
And lots of stuff I sadly can't put online. :-)

I like that the series has encouraged children to read but I just wish
that found that impetus with a series that was actually good.

No idea, but travelling by train to a hockey tournament in London about
16 years ago I got talking to an old boy who told me that he and his
brother had tried to get some unicycle polo going in the 50s, but
couldn't find enough unicyclists. He was overjoyed to learn that there
was a unicycle hockey league.

I was a kid that read when the series started.
It meant that every time people saw me reading they started to pressure me
into reading those books.
I promised myself I wouldn't read those books before there was a 2 year
period nobody said I should. It's the perfect hipster/curiosity balance.
That time has arrived. (okay, actually I'm already 3 months late but
whatever)

You should really read the Harry Potter Books!

There, that should save you for another 2 years
