wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who is in the same boat I was :
broken email and/or reduced to using a second hand PC with somebody else's
mail on it. The Google mail thing is easy and quick to use.

I actually will recommend you take a look at Yahoo's new email system,
since you are just now discovering efficient web based systems. They
changed it recently so it looks and feels like a stand-alone email client
when you use it. I'm kicking myself for switching away to gmail since I
really like yahoo's new interface.

Gmail's offering of IMAP and POP access is the big difference for me here
- you can get at your messages if you want to directly, whereas with a web
only system (as Yahoo has become for standard users I believe), you're
kinda stuffed if you want all your messages - in fact, whilst POP is
reasonably common, IMAP (the significantly better) is rare to offer.
That's why for free personal mail, I'll continue to use Gmail until things
change. (Yahoo don't totally fail at opening up their stuff, their aerial
imagery is libre, which is rare - and better than google's)

If you're worried about switching email providers because that means
telling everyone that you've got a new email address - then I may
as well plug www.juggler.net - which is an email forwarding service
for jugglers, which gives you anythin...@juggler.net - which
you can then point at gmail, yahoo, msn or wherever.
Did I mention that juggler.net is free?

By the time I was at school, Ian Smith - the politician to whom you refer
- was old news; but the Aussie soap opera Neighbours was getting really
popular and my classmates noticed that I had the same name as the actor
who played Harold Bishop. So I was known as "Harold" for a while.

I used to care about that - in fact, my previous email provider was
selected primarily based on having imap. However, I realized recently
that I check my email from so many different computers (2 locations of
work, a laptop, and at home), that I really don't care about having
pop/imap since I'm going to use the web client exclusively. If having pop
access is important to you, then you're right, gmail is the way to go.
Yahoo will probably keep charging for non-web access for the foreseeable
future.

That would be the smart thing to do. In fact I own a couple domains. If
I were really smart, I would set up a forward on one of those. But that
might take 5 minutes of my time, so I probably won't bother.

I agree, I don't use the imap for my gmail usually, but the freedom to get
my messages from google if ever i decide to stop using their service is a
not insignificant feature.

Hehehe... I find it amusing that a fair population of the UK know the
name of that actor, yet I, living in Australia, don't. I'll just blame
the fact that I'm not usually home from work at 6.30-7.00pm weekdays to
watch it.

The thing is, Dave, when Neighbours got popular here, it was instantly
MASSIVE. I think it's due mainly to the I-discovered-it-myself factor,
back then there was no internet and no in-house advertising on television.
People would only find out about Neighbours if one of their pals told them
or if they happened to catch it themselves. The end result was that
schoolkids and housewives everyehere would discuss the latest plot
developments in awed and breathless tones. Maybe that's a lesson for
advertisers - minimalism works if the product is good enough!

I remember why I didn't set up a forward when I set up my other emails -
It's because I wanted to be able to have the same outgoing as ingoing
email, without my emails looking like spam. Is there any way to have
juggler.net do that?

You can setup most email clients (and Gmail, too) to make sure that the
address you send from is always the same as the address you received with.

"...if the product is good enough" Are you kidding me?! We're talking
about 'Neighbours' here. I must admit that I've never watched an episode
of 'Eastenders', but if 'Neighbours' is regarded as a good product over
there, then the UK soapie market has a lot to answer for. Although I must
admit that it must have something going for it, as it's got a fair
following in both our countries, which is a big ask for a low-budget TV
soap that's been around for 22 years.

It's not really a secret. I've discussed it a fair bit in the past
(mainly as a vehicle for lamenting how few conventions I get to). But as
