I can do 100 catches of 9 balls using a variety of multiplex patterns. I
straight 9-ball run for 100 catches, however, no way :( Best I can achieve
is a flash.

Wow, I never really thought about what a distinction 100 catches of 9 is.
That's one of the rarest tricks that I think we are likely to be able to
find accurate statistics on.

I have to disagree with that. While I don't know about 9 balls, Sergey
certainly had (and probably still has) a very impressive 7 ball pattern
with rather large balls. He was (and probably still is) also very good
with clubs. It doesn't do him justice at all to label him as 'more of a
ring juggler', although his accomplishments with rings are also very
impressive.

It's not really a label if you like rings more than clubs and balls, even
if you're good at all of them. I didn't mean it like all he did was rings,
but more that he seems to like rings more than anything else. He pushed
his ring juggling a lot farther than he did with anything else.

1. Sergei Ignatov is described in 4000 Years of Juggling Vol.II, p.100 as
doing a flash of 9 balls caught in nets. However, I asked Sergei and Karl
Heinz Ziethen about it and they both said it was a mistake, that Sergei
has never worked on nine.
Took me a while to find it.
I remember reading somewhere he could do a 6up out of 8 of his enormous
balls though.
Other jugglers who could have possibly done 100 catches of 9 rings are
Alexander Kiss and Jian Wen Qian.

Well, actually, not practicing 9 at all, my record is 16 now (it's getting
pretty consistent, so 18c will take maybe a week...), and I flashed it for
the first time in may 2007.
So the actual time: 2 years without practice, then 1 week with practice,
then 2 weeks with no juggling at all because of a wound on my finger, and
then the second juggling day I ALMOST qualled.

I have to agree with Emman and Sam. I find it very unlikely that he was
able to run 9 balls for long given his style of juggling and the size of
ball he preferred using.

Since I've been juggling forever, my old record of 30 catches doesn't
really mean much anymore. That was with small cotton fergies in 1994 I
think. Using typical sport bags size beanbags I recently had 25 catches.
Yesterday only 19, but it "feels" good, if you know what I mean.

a bit of topic: Is there any place where one can find your 7 ball advivce
online, other than the repost here on rec.juggling? I think that is one
great piece of advice on learning seven balls. I think I remember that it
used to be on your website, but I can't find it anymore. I wanted to post
a link to it in the 7 ball race threat (and on the little website we use
for our progress spreadsheets). I have a version of it also on my
harddrive, so I could just post the text on the aforementioned website
directly if you have no objections, I just thought linking to the original
source would be more appropriate.
In any case thanks a lot for posting this advice in the first place!

9 Rings feels better now than any other time in my life. Every day I'm
getting runs in the 20's. I start to really struggle with the 4th 'cycle'
(after the 27th throw) I dream about blasting past that wall some day.

objects and in Sergei's case rings. I didn't really explain that though

I am reasonable sure about Sergei's 100 catches of 9 rings because it came
up during a long conversation with Sergei Jr. at WJF5. I guess "because
his nephew said" is not the most compelling argument.

You don't think so? You should maybe practice some other things to help
you. I have average guy hands. Really not that big and I can hold five
faaaaairly comfortably. Mind you I guess I should work on it more. But I'm
not really in to 9 ball league yet. 7 still needs a lot of work.
And I use 3 inch russians, so I'm sure you could if you tried hard.
I practiced holding a lot of balls by learning how to do the rotating
pyramid with my russians. That is, the contact juggling trick. It help me
get a much better feel to holding larger balls and having my hands be more
relaxed.

I'm right-handed and start odd numbers with my left hand. I just watched

and he starts 9 balls with his left and in the comments says that he's
left-handed.
On the other hand, I found some videos of Sergei on youtube and he does
seem to start 7 and 9 objects with his right. But you're still a pessimist
since you didn't check before you assumed it.

Dang dude, that's awesome! I'd love to see a video of anything close. Long
runs of 9 on film are fairly uncommon. I managed 28 throws last week,
inching my progress forward... sigh.

I'm hoping to take it seriously enough. not that i care if people beat me,
but just as motivation to myself. I haven't actually flashed it, but i

To me it seems like he might have believed you meant his personal best ON
STAGE as Anthony Gatto said that Sergei's best stage run was something
like that - unless he just got really lucky that time seeing as I remember
it to have been about 120 catches.
But that would have been unwise of him, so maybe Anthony just didn't
remember quite correctly and it WAS 144-145 catches on stage?
