The rec.juggling Juggling Video

What started out as just a little something to work on my editing skills,
has raised some questions about doing a collaboration video from all your
jugglers here. I will be more than willing to edit one together but I will
need everyones help in doing so since I am not much of a juggler myself.
Here is what I was thinking for a format (although please give me your
sugestions for others):
--My idea, inspired buy the coming on of spring and the warm weather, we
do an "out side" video. Video tape your ticks outside in the sun, in a
field, at a playfround, anything that is outside and shows how nice the
weather is.
--If you can, try to use some of the outside things as elements in your
video. Juggling in a tree, do passing on the lake from one boat to another
boat, something, anything inventive.
--Depending on how many people participate, I will only limit how much
video you send me by saying Don't go to crazy. If you have a decent sized
file, i am sure that there are on-line servises that we can use to
transfer them since an e-mail attachment might not be sufficient.
Those are my thoughts so far everyone. Let me know what you think, what
kind of ideas you have, if you want to perticipate, anything.

Well, I'm interested.....
I think it would be best if people did not give all the details of whether
they're going to
participate/what they're going to film. It will make the final result all

Nice idea! I've got some ideas forming already... with a bit of luck
they may even happen ;-)
You know what, I'm dead chuffed that you're taking the suggestion and
running with it! If there's anything I can do to help the process along
at any point just ask, replace usenet with lp to make the from address
on this post valid.
The only suggestion I've got at this stage is some handwavy advice about
quality for contributors.
1 - save in the highest quality that your editing package can manage
(I found in the past that being more specific than that raises more
questions than it answers)
2 - if you can work out how to, deinterlace your clip before you submit
it (as some file formats *cough*wmv*cough* make it really hard to get a
clean deinterlace after they've been rendered)
But apart from that, you're on the right track! Lets get this party
rolling!

Now, are you really sure you don't want to place a limit on the files you
receive, not even length of footage? Maybe some of those who have compiled
videos before could weigh in with how much raw footage they received, as
30 videos each lasting 3 minutes is a heck of a lot more to deal with than
30 videos of 10 seconds.

I am imagining I saw this project done twice before... oh yeah...
Anyway, I'm in. Just set a deadline, and I'll go and film something if the
weather allows it. So far it's gone back to being fall here, kinda feels
like we're going to have another winter before skipping spring and going
straight to summer.

Also, someone has to say this: It's not "well voulenteered" since I am
sure everyone who has almost enough time on their hands here would be more
than extremely happy to edit this video(I'll do it five times if you ask
me), more like "well dared", taking the chance of getting booed by people
who are boring, not wanting to do another collaboration video. Luckily it
seems people are positive. Yay.
On the other hand, shouldn't such a video be made my someone you know for
sure is really good at editing? Like Jugglingeek or John Nations? Uh,
which I know kind of kills the purpose of the video... But still. This is
available for discussion.

So, I think that one month is more than enough time for everyone to put a
little something together. So i'm going to make JUNE 7TH the cut-off date
for submissions.
I believe that if everyone does no more that about 15 sec, that should be
more than enough material for me to work with.
As for what format to put it in, Little Paul, can you suggest a good
format for things to be saved in?
And the most important part: Where to send it :)
In the subject just put something that has to do with juggling so that I
know what it is.
Send me what ya got we will get started with it :)

Nope. I'd love to see another collaboration video, but absolutely 100%
would not be arsed to trawl through loads of clips, find some decent music
and try and make something out of it. Not even if I had nothing else to

That's a good limit. It's long enough for most people to fit something
in, and short enough that the file sizes are small enough to work with
and it stops people from giving you a 3 minute non-stop-routine and
you then having to find edit points within that where you can drop 95%
of the footage - which is not only tricky, but really disheartening!

Aside from the advice I gave about quality (which norbi helpfully cut
and paste) - I think my advice would be "save in whatever format you
can manage, we'll handle transcoding it all to the same format later"
It's a trade off between technical excelence (it would be lovely if
everyone submitted raw dv at the same frame rate) and allowing as
many people as possible to take part (loads of people have cameras
but only have access to windows movie maker and can't export raw
dv from their camera - not to mention that some people will be
shooting pal, some ntsc, some widescreen, some not, and I'm sure
some flash bugger will be shooting HD)
Last time I ran one of these things, I got a much better response by
saying "do what you can, I'll use at least something from everyone
that submits a clip" and then finding ways to deal with the pain
caused by trying to munge wmv, mov, mpeg and avi files together.
Much as I hate to say it, quicktime pro got me through a lot of that
process.

Overview
The theme
Maximum length of clip
What formats are preferred/accepted [2]
What formats are NOT accepted (Lowest accepted frame rate, perhaps?)
Closing submission date
How to get the clips to you[3][4]
(Targeted completion date?)
Hope that's all useful. Also, don't get downhearted if very few people
respond in the first week or two
- I would guess that it will take most people a bit of time to get the
time/location/capturing/etc to all
come together.

I've just watched that, possibly for the first time since editing it,
and I really rather enjoyed it. It's nice coming back to a project
having forgotten all the details and watching it almost for the first
time - and being surprised by bits of it!
I might have to go back and watch the juggletweens with that in mind.

I'd be tempted to set up a googlemail account specifically for this
project. A nice fresh account sould make it much easier to find any
submissions.

I hadn't seen this video yet...fun to watch! I wish that it was easier
for me to match the names up to the people in the video, though. Since I
don't know most of the people who post here, it'd be cool to be able to
put a face with each name/screen name. Any way to make that happen on
this video, such as putting the person's name with each clip? I don't
know if that would actually look good, just a suggestion...

What I suggest, on the editing part, is to have the names of each
performer appear in the bottom right of the screen or somewhere so people
can see who's who. This was used for the most recent diabolo.ca collab and
worked really well.

If you rummage around in the archives, I think I remember going through
that video and naming all the clips in order which may help. It's not
particulalry easy to follow though as some of the cutting's a little
too fast.

I tried that when I was editing that video, but it got too messy
and quickly became visually difficult to follow. If you look at
the credits there really were a lot of people involved!
I'm trying not to intefere too much (as this one's not my project!)
but an alternative that I thought of at the time was to grab a still
from each submitted clip and instead of a credit roll have an old
skool 1980's tv "set your video recorders now, here comes an information
burst!" which flashed each clip up for 3 or 4 frames with the name
of the person involved. Anyone interested in who's who could then
have paused the video and stepped through it slowly to put names to
faces.
However, but the time I'd got that idea I'd already spent far too long
on the edit and just wanted to get it out the door :-)

I'd definitely recommend getting a few scenery and non-juggling shots to
break the video up and put more emphasis on the "It's really nice weather
outside" idea behind the video.
I'll check back for more info and start getting soe footage.

they were 11.4 meg and most email services can send at least 20). I'm
guessing maybe your inbox is a bit full from previous submissions? Should

I don't believe that it is my e-mail because this is my extra e-mail
account and it has almost nothing in it. Could be that hot mail is just
being a pain in the ass.

How about having multiple people edit videos using the same submitted
content? I once saw such a thing for yo-yo and it turned out very well. I
think people had more than 15 second clips which allowed the editors to
select different tricks and really come up with different products, not to
mention different order, transitions, music, special effects, etc.

I would vote for that, but I am quite sure many people will say "naaah...
it will be too much to watch...". IMO, more is better anyway, so I can't
see that reasoning... so yeah, good idea!

Hm, I believe the way to go about this would be to have ThrowinStuff101
collecting the material and sharing it with all volunteers like Sondre (and
maybe others to come). At least, if ThrowinStuff101 doesn't mind other editors
and doing this extra organizational work.

Hehehe... There's a fair bit of truth in that. I went for a run at
lunchtime today, and it was quite pleasant. Blue skies, 22 degrees, no

I'm actually happy to see that this video hasn't happened yet, because it
turned out to be impossible for me to contribute at the beginning of the
summer. Things were so busy! It actually feels really weird to be

BUT: You better comment on your nomination to restart this project! :)
Or, well, just restart it and do it. Propose a new deadline for entries, so you
can edit your ejc-video, while we make some good clips :)
The theme of the project was "spring and warm weather"... Spring is over now,
but warm weather might still apply in late summer. However, now would be a
chance to change the theme ;) But that's your decision now Sondre, as it is your
project now :P
