Highs:
- Lunch with Vova. It's always fun to interact on a totally regular level
with someone I've seen on videos and heard people talk about.
- Jamming with Matt Hall. He really helped me out with a lot of things,
and I was really just looking forward to meeting one of the big diabolo
names.
- Finally finding someone to play 3diabolos with. I can't do it yet, but
he can! And I'm sorry I forgot your name within 15 minutes of hearing it.
He gave me some really good advice, and I'm progressing.
- The renegade. Oh man. I've never seen such a ridiculous renegade.
Lows:
- Not getting there until Saturday morning. I missed a really good Math
of Juggling talk, which would've been amazing.
- Time went WAY too fast. It was like hey I'm here! OMG its games. OMG
its the show. OMG gyms closed. Where'd the fest go?
Goal:
- Make progress toward something I've been working on for a while now. I
made fan progress, 3low progress, excalibur stuff progress. Lots of
progress.
Crush:
Male - Vova. That robot act. I was laughing and amazed the whole time.
Female - Laura Ernst. So talented, so friendly, so pretty, so
likes-to-make-fun-of-me-for-not-being-a-toss-juggler
Bane: Video. I got maybe a minute of video footage? No fest vid this
time :-( Also relates back to the time going way too fast.

High. The public show. The whole public show. The show was amazing.
Low. My Dad waking me up Sunday morning. Twice.
Goal. To learn a new yo-yo trick (check) and to flash five balls (check).
Crush. Dana. She's really nice, and cute, and a really good juggler, even
if she is eight years older than me.
Bane. Tristan had a bane, but asked me not to post it because he doesn't
want to upset anyone.
== Greg's HLGCB ==
High: Right, I'm being an absolute and total nerd, but I have to say that
of all the wonderful things in a
wonderful weekend, Allen Knutson's /Mathematics of Juggling/ lecture was
definitely the high point. He
didn't cover anything new to me (space-time diagrams, siteswap, and
landing states) but it was neat to see
how he presented the material and how he played to the juggling crowd and
the Cornell math crowd at the
same time. Particular geeky high moment: when Allen was talking about
landing states and said "~... but
that's a pretty boring transition, so at this point we move from pure to
applied mathematics...~"
Low: My son Tristan forgetting his dental retainer in a restaurant on the
way home and not realizing it until
we were ten minutes up the highway. Our waiter went into the back and dug
through the garbage, but it
didn't turn up, so that's an extra $180 to add to the fest costs....
Goal: To learn something new. I know this is pretty generic, but it really
is my goal at most juggling fests --
- and it's been surprising how often lately I don't learn anything new
because I spend too much time just
hanging, passing, and working on stuff I already know. But at this fest I
really did learn some new stuff: I
finally sorted out the Time-Reverse Mills Mess after a prod from Raffi
(sp?) and I also went to Nicholas
Flair's hat workshop and learned a bunch of new (to me) hat stuff.
Crush: Warren Hammond --- he is one totally hot babe! I am so totally
stealing him away from Cate!
Bane: The Enduring Absence of Allen Knutson. I didn't get a chance to talk
to him after his lecture and was
hoping to chat at some point in the gym, but he never turned up.
Of course, there's lots of stuff missing here --- great show with
memorable performances from everyone
especially Steve Patroski (what a guy!), great (if beer-free) Renegade,
great vibe in the gym (except when
Vova's workshop sucked all the juggling energy away), great crash space at
Harold's, great cheap food in
College Town, great catching up with friends including Jeff, Marcus, Sean,
Nick, Greg, John, Joe, the other
John, Laura, Cate, Warren, Harold, Dana, Paris, the other Sean, Mike,
Don... and a bunch of people I should
probably also mention but am forgetting in my current sleep-deprived state.
Greg
Lows:
- I didn't really learn anything new or make progress on anything I had
been working on. Oh well... Other than that, I don't really have any other
lows.
Goal:
- I had a goal... qualify 7 balls. Only made 11 catches several times.
Could have had 13 catches a couple of rounds, but I am still not doing
well on collecting high numbers of balls in my hands.
Crush:
- Male: Hmm.. I am going to list a few people, because I just met several
new jugglers that really stand out in my mind right now.
~Matt Hall: He had some great stories to tell at the Billings's house on
Saturday night. I really didn't converse too much with him, but I
definitely enjoyed his presence. And his performance and stage presence...
It was awesome! Oh! And he's an awesome dancer... Haha!
~Kyle: Don't remember his last name, but I met him at Philly Fest. He is
a really chill juggler and I enjoyed his company.
- Female: This is definitely reserved entirely for Laura. =) I am so glad
she is moving to New York! Now I get to see her more often and spend more
time juggling with her! W00t!
Bane:
- For the sake of not causing tension on the boards, I will not say names,
but a couple of people bothered the crap out of me this weekend. Both of
them were very obnoxious in their own seperate ways, and I really could
have done without their presence. Luckily one of these people I was able
to avoid for most of the festival, but the other... there was no way to
shake 'im loose. This person doesn't even juggle! Gah... For those of you
who know me personally, you probably know who I am talking about and more
than likely fully understand what I am feeling. For those who don't, I am
sorry if you think I am mean, cruel, or just a regular ol' jerkface, but
believe me... you have no idea what I went through this weekend...
Luckily I didn't let this individual ruin my Big Red Fest! And I am
saddened at the thought of waiting another year for my third Big Red Fest.
But on the other hand, I look forward to the year in between to practice
the tricks and skills I currently hold while spending time learning new
tricks and new patterns. Big Red Fest will probably always be my favorite
festival, as it was this fest that sparked my juggling passion and desire.
=)
And this is a pretty long post, but I just took a five hour nap, and I am
fresh, fueled, and ready to go! Okay, I'm done...
See you all next year! Or at the next fest... which is... Mad Fest?
Seeing as I know you personally, I think I know who it is you couldn't
shake loose. Sorry man. How annoying. Glad to know you still had a
great weekend. What a dope convention.
~Joe Showers
Lows:
~ I didnt juggle particularly well all weekend.
~ I'm sick and I couldn't stop coughing!
~ I'm still able to say I NEVER win raffles.
Goal:
~ I can't say I had a goal. Just wanted to have fun, and that was
accomplished :)
Crush:
~ haha I have to give a shoutout to Paris. In addition to being an
awesome juggler (and the only juggler with big, black shiny balls), hes a
really good dancer. I found that out on the renegade stage lol.
And of course Tristan Phillips would totally be my crush if he weren't 8
years younger than me ;)
Bane:
~ I cleared my wallet buying fest stuff.
~ My next fest is months and months away :(
Low:
- Not playing combat on Saturday
- Time going outrageously fast on Saturday (I agree with you Tim)
- Messing up the transition from 5 ball cascade to half shower once again
in 5b endurance
- Missing the mathematics lecture
Goal:
- Get the 6 ring sync 4 up 360: check
- Learn club multiplexes: check and then some
- Pass rings and balls: nope
- Meet new people: check
Crush:
- Cate: Her performance was out of this world and I can't believe how much
better she's gotten. Keep up the good work Cate!
Bane:
- Time going way too fast. Too many awesome workshops!
I'm excited for next year already.
Hey, hands off! Do you have any idea how much work I had to do to make him
hot? Seriously, it wasn't easy--I didn't have much to start with--and now
that I've done all that hard work, there's no way I'm going to let someone
else steal him from me... Although, I will rent him out for a reasonable
fee.
Cate
What a great year. Even better than last year in my opinion. It's
subject for debate and all, but Cornell, for me, keeps getting better and
better. I only wonder what they're going to do for next year to top this
one...
Highs- First and foremost, my routine in the show. I feel like I did an
awesome job and I got a lot of good compliments from a lot of jugglers,
which made me feel warm on the inside. My parents were also very proud of
me.
Then comes hanging out with all my friends. Seeing Vova, Michael, Peter,
Greg, Jon, John, John S., Sean, Marcus, Sky, Tony, Kyle, Tim, Josh, Dana,
Jason, Warren, Cate, Greg, Tristan, Joey, Dominique, Anthony and Lindsay.
If I forgot some, you know I love you.
Meeting such great people and jugglers like the Mitasch brothers, Matt
Hall and a bunch of others.
Running such a crazy renegade show. I've never seen anyone juggle a live
crab, a dead squid and some freeze dried fish before. It was disgusting,
hilarious, over the top and overall, renegade. I hope we set some
standards for future renegade shows.
Seeing the other public show performers doing so well. It had to be a
great show from the audience perspective. What a great theater too, much
better than last year. Vova's new routine pwns and I can see why
Jonglissimo is the two time teams champion for IJA. Outstanding.
Reading the HLGCB and not seeing negative comments so far about the MC of
the show.
Picking up Matt Hall from the airport and having a nice, long,
pre-convention chat with him. It was just me, him and two others and we
got to pick each others brains. It was a good time.
Combat.
.. NEW PX3'S!!!!
Lows- Lost my voice on Friday. Still haven't found it.
Not buying cigar boxes. I don't think Sky had any, but that's just
speculation because I never bothered to even check. I really want some.
Combat.
Goal- Film video, fail. My camera didn't move an inch from where I put it
in my car.
Have fun, check, check, check. I couldn't have had a better time.
Teach my girlfriend to juggle, check. She's got the bug now.
Trade juggling moves with multiple people, check. It was so infectious, I
think I have a JTD... juggling-ly transmitted disease.
Run the renegade show well, check. Based on the reviews I've heard so
far, they liked it... they really liked it.
Do well in the public show, check. Good enough for me!
Play combat, check.
Crush- Dana and Linka for being great stage hands.
Vova, Manuel, Matt and Michael for being ever-present inspirations.
My girlfriend, Jess for being wonderful this entire weekend.
Combat.
Bane- One person in particular. I think everyone at the fest knows who
I'm talking about. Good thing he's on Greg Billing's team. I'm sure this
person will soon tell you how much he liked the Cornell festival.
Oh, and combat.
I haven't seen this in a while, but it was used a few times in the past.
I wanna bring it back.
Surprise- Learning that after not having five unbroken clubs to practice
with for four months, I can still do a hefty amount of tricks with them.
~Joe Showers
Lows:
- The 4 hour drive both directions.
- Getting les than 4 hours of sleep on day 1, and then sleeping in too
late on the last day and missing almost all of the workshops
- The JoJ episode that I recorded there. It's going to be such a wierd
episode.
Goal:
- Do something new = Acomplished
- Meet Matt hall = Acomplished
- Get photos and video, unlike every other con I've went to = Acomplished
- Not die = Acomplished
Crush:
Male - Vova's performance for the main show was insane. Pretty hot too.
Female - Laura Ernst. Her light poi act foir renegade was so f'n HOT!
Bane:
- Not enough combat. There was only one game, and it only lasted about
an hour!
So you can do all the 30 something types of juggling shown on the David
Cain video? How about all the types of juggling that David can't do but
that others can?
Nigel
interested in your Guy Heatcote Ball Stick moves
How much? I've been looking around for a reasonably priced male juggler.
If Cate was bluffing about Warren, my prices are extremely reasonable. As
long as I get to pass clubs with
you some more.
Greg
.. who thinks that any woman with a 100 watt bulb in each hand must be
hot.
Low:
I went to a workshop and we had to pick partners. No one wanted me to be
their partner, I was the last one picked. Took me back to grade school
when I was never picked for kickball.
Goal: Juggle and have fun. Done and done.
I wish I had gone around and meet more new people.
Crush:
Vova- his show performance was amazing.
Steve Patroski- he was so hot.
Kyle Diggs- He's got some awesome three club moves.
Bane:
I woke up on Sunday morning with a bad pain in my neck that still hasn't
gone away. Also, there were a couple of people that got on my nerves. I
could avoid them most of the time though.
- Cate :)
- Matt Hall helping me with my 5 club 3 up pirouette. It's way better
now, thanks Matt!
- Getting to see Vova and Lyndsay, it'd been a really long time since I'd
gotten to hang out with them.
- Getting to see Joe Showers, it'd maybe even been longer since I'd seen
him.
- Meeting Marcus Monroe and Sean Blue, they rock.
- Getting to see Laura again and driving back to Rochester with her after
the convention.
- Staying with the Pedens the day before the fest and getting to hang out
with Jeff again. He's a great guy and a great friend.
- Having a number of people notice I'd lost weight and been working out.
- Playing combat reasonably well.
- Winning the quarter juggling endurance! Best competition to win I think.
- The show. It was so good. Highlights from that for me were Nicholas
Flair's routine and Cate's.
Lows:
- Leaving.
- That it won't happen again for another year.
- Getting sick on the plane ride back (though I was happy it held out
until after the festival).
Goals:
- Qualify 6 clubs again (didn't happen)
- Hit something hard (check, 5 ball 2 stage, 5c bx, 5c 3 up pirouette)
- Cate (check)
- Not get beat up too bad by Cate (also check)
- Beat Cate at 6 ball endurance (check if you count fountain, not check if
you count shower...dammit)
- Make it to Matt Hall's multiplex siteswap workshop (check, great
workshop)
- Not suck way hard at combat (eh, maybe check)
Crushes:
- hmmmmm.....this one is pretty obvious...Greg Phillips
- oh yeah, and Cate ;)
- Matt Hall too, for 5 club help and siteswap awesomeness.
- Steve Pratroski. I have never seen grace combined so perfectly with
juggling, much less on rollerskates! Truly a privilege to see.
- Laura. You're always great to see and hang out with.
Bane:
- My neck hurt quite a bit saturday, kept me from juggling harder that day.
- Eggs and Quiznos.
Copying Joe,
Surprises:
- Dominique!!! I didn't think we'd see you! In fact I was pretty sure we
wouldn't. You are awesome for making it to the fest. Can't wait to see
you at the next one you're not going to.
Warren
Yeah, I'd have to say that I'll never eat eggs or Quizznos ever again...
ever.
It was great driving back with you too, I haven't laughed that hard in a
long time and I was very tired of driving alone in my car.
I'll do it for free..... you can't say better than that!
You missed that on Sunday too...
~Joe Showers
Yea man, great to see you too! It's been a while since the PM4L were in
the same place at the same time. Also, there were a number of times when
I looked at you and thought "jeez, he must be turning down girls left and
right". You were hot man. Just as hot as Nicholas' routine.
>
> Goals:
>
> - Beat Cate at 6 ball endurance (check if you count fountain, not check if

I can clean both your clocks at shower endurance. That was proven. Bring
it. It's in my name for God's sake!
>
> Copying Joe,
>
Thanks.
> Warren
~Joe Showers
> Also, there were a number of times when

You'd think that wouldn't you? They keep getting mysteriously beaten up
or disappear...not sure who's responsible...
Warren
Dear Laura,
I can only speak for myself, but I would have been happy to be your
partner. You were sitting over by Michael K. so I figured you guys
would pair up. Heck, my partner left 1/3 of the way through the
process and I was left hanging until Sean rescued me. Of course, I'm
not going to complain when Sean Blue takes me under his wing and
schools me. Still, I'm sorry that was your low.
matt
High:~Walking into the gym Friday and the first thing I saw was Vova
juggling 7 clubs. Blew my mind away. I just stood there watching for like
half an hour
~The show was amazing. Joe Showers' "Bombs over Bagdad" was just unreal.
~Seeing Cate in person not only during the performance but also seeing and
talking to her during open gym
~ The RENEGADE show was completely insane. I taped the entire thing and
plan on using it in school for an editing project if everyone doesn’t
mind. Might have to edit out Pete Irish's ass though.
~Chatting with Sky for over an hour at the Billings house listening to all
her great stories.
~Watching Joe Showers do Chops with Vollyballs. Absolutley amazing
Low: Besides the fact that I didn't get very much sleep during the
weekend, there were really no lows for me. Although I wish that I could
have met a few more people.
goal:
~To buy a set of clubs :Got 'um
~To buy a good set of balls: nope
~Learn a new trick: Didn't really learn a new one but was taught a bunch
by Joe during the Kick-up workshop, and just from watching everyone
~Playing Combat: was a blast but I am not good enough with clubs yet to
even really attempt anything
crush:
~Seeing Cate in the gym and in the performance. I have been watching her
videos for some time now and really do love watching her do what she does.
~I am going to list Laura here because I got to hang out with her a bit
here and there, but the last words she said to me before I left were
"Carl, (not my name) It was really, really horrible to meet you." Dead
serious. That’s what she said
bane: exhaustion on Sunday was my bane of the entire festival.
surprise: I didn't know that I would actually get the chance to just hang
out and talk with some of the big names of juggling. Sitting in a circle
with Joe Showers as he was telling stories and stuff was really one of my
all time highs of this festival (even though I don't think that he even
knows who I was but I really don't care)~~And I have to list the RENEGADE
show here because it would be impossible to not be surprised by that.
P.S. My goal for next year is to win the 5 club endurance. It's a loftey
goal but that is what I want to do so Look Out :)
> - Matt Hall helping me with my 5 club 3 up pirouette. It's way better
> now, thanks Matt!
I'm glad I could help. I figure as long as I can't do them, I might
as well help someone else get them down!
>
> Goals:
> - Make it to Matt Hall's multiplex siteswap workshop (check, great
> workshop)
I'm really grateful to hear you say that. I felt like I lagged in
that workshop. I did it a little bit cleaner at IJA this summer--I
didn't even get to any of the six ball variations except for [87]21.
> - Matt Hall too, for 5 club help and siteswap awesomeness.
Okay, now I'm blushing. Speaking of siteswap awesomeness, I put your
"Warren's Fucking Awesome 5 Ball Multiplex Siteswap" into Juggling Lab
and it came up not valid. Help me out brother! Did I type it in
correctly? This is what I copied into Stickies from your slip of
paper:
(2x,[64])(8x,6)(2x,2)*
Great to see you brudda. It's been a while...
matt

Hey, I was thinking about that pattern on the way home the other day, and
wasn't sure if I wrote it down right. It's actually this:
(2x,[64])(8x,6)(2,2x)*
I just checked it out in Juggling Lab too, and it works.
Later!
Well Carl, I hope you got a kick out of it. I certainly did. ;)
Sweet! As a recently graduated college student I can't say no to free.
I just got back home about two hours ago and the cats have generously
decided to let me live. I figure
I'll celebrate with my own HLGCBS.
Highs (in no particular order):
Breaking with Paris and John at Renegade
The Show--4 standing ovations to a lesser or greater degree. Finished in
less than two hours. Got to
work with some great professionals and diligent minions.
Sean Blue's workshop on Sunday--I may take up rings and go artsy.
Seriously.
Playing Combat with Jeff Peden, Joe Showers and the rest of the crew on
Friday night. I never play
Combat. Seriously.
Scoring Beers and Burger King with John Satriano and Kyle after the Public
Show. He's such a cool guy,
and he knows a ton about skating legend, Steve Petroski.
Friday night in Emily's kitchen with Warren, Cate, Marcus, and Sean. Good
times over Jambalaya.
The Games--I was happy to do moderately well in 5 clubs and 7 balls. Oh
yeah, Best Trick was okay.
Compering the Public Show and having a blast doing it. What a great
chance at redemption.
The Renegade Show--given that alcohol was not a main factor, the show was
appropriately wacky and
twisted. Joe and Marcus are to be congratulated.
Driving around with Sean, Paris, and Marcus searching for food late after
Greg's party. Thank God for
the Short Stop Deli!
Hanging with Greg Sunday night talking stuff over, watching the show, and
Facebooking.
Jamming with everyone with 4-5 clubs. Multiplexes baby!
Allan Knutson's talk on Friday. Who woulda thunk I'd be his siteswap
animator?
Low:
Opening the Public Show in less than worthy fashion.
Goals:
Hit my routine strong: Fail.
Everything Else: Check
Crushes:
Greg Billing--for putting on a great festival, always doing what it took,
and for being a kind host
Marcus Monroe--for being so multi-talented. I had no idea. NO idea.
Joe Showers--for being a truly passionate performer and juggler. You
remind me of me when I had
been juggling for three years.
Jeff Peden--for being one of the best show directors with whom I've ever
worked. Seriously.
Michael Karas--for being a good sport about the roast.
Bane: The wicked ass string burn on my right side from excalibur on
Friday night. Ugh.
Surprises: The size of the Cornell campus. Glen Luke and how good he is.
Hitting the 3 box
pirouette to footcatch on the first try. Seriously!
So, after waiting a whole year for the chance to get to Cornell, it's
over. It was SO worth the wait.
Great times with good people.
Matt

I forgot one more: Tim Ellis. His strip diabolo act at Renegade was
short and sweet, plus I had a blast doing some vertax passing with
him.
matt
Sounds like you had a great time! I'm also really glad to hear I was part
of the reason you had fun. I always enjoy meeting new people and
entertaining crowds (you could probably tell by the stories).
If you tell me a few things about what you were juggling or what you
looked like, I'll more than likely remember you.
~Joe Showers
Yea Matt, that was pretty sweet. Nice Sean McKinney style you had there.

Much thanks.
Dude, it was so nice to finally meet you and learn a thing or two from
you. Not only were you cool to hang out with and talk to, but you had the
mad skills that made me wanna go practice for five hours yesterday trying
to learn all the new stuff you were dropping on my little head.
I can't wait to see you again man, probably IJA.
~Joe Showers
Dude! He's a juggler and a teacher! What more can you ask for! I
successfully passed excalibur for the first time within like 15 minutes.
Not to mention the load of tricks I'm going to steal from him. ;-)
And yes....I stripped for jugglers. I almost reconsidered after seeing
Vova's abs, but what the hell....it's renegade. Note to self: taking off
shirt while doing infinite suicides is a LOT harder than it looks. I
learned that one on stage while doing it.
Lows: - Having to leave as Matt started his excalibur workshop on
Sunday
- lack of decent, affordable accommodation in Ithaca
Goals: - work on excalibur - nope, not much anyway
- try some new box tricks - check
Crushes: - Matt Hall - great teacher
- Vova - nice public show performance
- Laura - love the lights / poi performance on the Renegade stage
(what was the song you performed to?)
Bane: - the 11 hours of driving to Ithaca and back
- dive of a hotel room costing 2 - 3 times what it was worth
Sean Haddow
Well I was a Cornell virgin before this week and I'm actually kind of
glad it was a dreary weekend
because the videos I've seen outside the gym always seem rainy and dreary.
So the stage and mood
were set perfectly.
Okay, so here's my HLGCB
Highs: eating pizza on saturday morning with new yorkers and assorted
company, parking at the
intersection of COLLEGE and COCK, having some success spinning a ball at
GLF's wrkshp, making big
plans with LE, PI, and MM, beating Matt Hall at his own game in Renegade,
getting roasted at
Renegade, getting second in 3b simon says, front row seats to public show,
Nicholas Flair, Cate Emily,
Vova's video intro, Manuel's hair.
Lows: not juggling that much on saturday morning and afternoon, missing a
bunch of workshops, too
much time between gym close and public show, music too quiet in public
show, feeling stupid during
best trick, being cut out of renegade even though I was the second person
to sign up.
goal: have fun (check) socialize (check) perform (no check)
crush: manuel mitasch (I want hair like that)....and I guess juggling
skills like that too.
bane: much of the renegade - joe and marcus told me that they were going
to try to make it like two
public shows. a public show followed by an even "sicker" renegade. Not a
major success here if you
ask me but I know it's their first year and hopefully they'll give it
another go next year. I was actually
glad that I was cut from performing because my act would not have fit into
the show at all.
also, that fuckin' quarter trick. Paris, I'm gonna slap you if I'm ever
in Harlem for that one! (that being
said, I've used it on people twice already since the fest haha)
all in all, a great fest! I will definitely return next year if I'm in
the area. I just love the green energy
of the ramin room, even more so when the sun peeks through those windows.
drops are so quiet!
It was great hanging out with you all - Paris, Cate, Laura, Joe, Marcus,
Nate, Greg, Tristan, Dominique,
Warren, Yoshi, Lindsay, Matt, Vova, Nicholas, John, Peter, etc. etc. etc.
~Karas

I'm still lost on the specifics of the game. Does one person do all the
pointing? And do you point on a tie or a win?
Highs:
-The high concentration of hot juggler girls at the fest. This one was
insane! Usually you'll be lucky to see one, but here we had Lernst, Linka,
Lindsay (yeah Vova!), and Dana there. I wasn't sure whether to look at 5
ball patterns or the hottie juggling them.
-Having so many funny adventures in Sean's car. You guys know what I mean.
-Being on "College & Cock"
-Seeing Vova's sick concept followed by a kick-ass routine!
-John challenging me to a dance-off. So much fun. Hafner is the man for
that idea.
-Watching my man Joe Showers pull off that routine
-Hanging with my usual fellow convention whores: Joe, Kyle, Dom, Sean,
Marcus, and Tim. We're at every frickin convention!
-Chilling with Matt Hall
-Ranking so high in so many games.
Lows:
-Ranking so high in so many games, but not winning any. I got my ass
handed to me in Best Trick in front of my younger cousin who thought that
I was the greatest until Matt Hall whooped my ass in front of him. Thanks
a lot man.
-Not getting to meet Steve Patroski. His performance was spiritual.
Goal:
-Arrive on Friday, not Saturday (check)
-Win a game (came close)
-Have fun (super check!!!!)
Crush:
-Dana, you're the man, but I gotta go with Steve Patroski. He's the 1983
world skating champion for crying out loud! If it wasn't for him being a
gold medalist, it would be you though.
Bane:
-The fest having to come to an end so quickly. We had a blast and next
thing I knew, it was time to go home.
Overall, it was a killer fest. I can't wait to see everybody at the next
fest.

Ooh, shiney! That looks nice. And certainly achievable. I might have to
have a crack at it at some stage. Cheers for the tip!
Dave
~Dana
QFT!!!! I think really though...he was everyone's crush, so we're all
just saying our #2 crushes.
you point on a rock/paper/scissors win. It's basically just rock paper
scissors but with a double tier. winning rps gets you to the pointing
level. You have to get your opponent to face the direction of your finger
to actually get a point. Otherwise you get no points.
It's good times. I like throwing the [64] straight up and the 6 right
after that straight up to the outside. Has a nice look that way.
Warren
That was kind of different too, at BJC he sat down next to me and was
"what's up" eating his Corn Flakes.
Highs:
--Actually juggling Friday night. I've been focusing a lot on my
handstands lately and was pleasantly surprised to find that I can still
throw some big stuff. A few people even commented on my style being
cool/pretty when I was just jamming with three clubs in the gym.
--Six ball fountain and shower endurance competitions with Warren on
Friday night (and then of course Joe Showers came over and destroyed us
both). Seriously, how many couples do you know that can have six ball
endurance competitions that are actually competitive?
--Seeing Warren again and seeing how serious he was about getting back
into shape. He looked really good and a lot of people noticed. I missed
him a lot and it was good to see him again. Also it was nice to have him
as my props bitch because he knows my act and I didn't have to worry about
any surprises once I got out on stage.
--Getting to see and hang out with a lot of cool jugglers that I haven't
seen in a while: Matt Hall, Micheal Karas, Laura, Dominique (although I
only saw her for like five seconds), Jeff Peden, Marcus, Vova, Joe
Showers! and Paris.
--Meeting cool new people: Dana, Lyndsay (Lindsay?), Peter Irish, Steve
P., etc...
--Getting to go early in the show so that I actually got a chance to watch
most of it.
--having my act go fairly well and having the new material be well
received.
Lows:
--Not getting to do much juggling because of the long drive and being in
the show.
--Missing all the games for the same reason. Although neither of those
really bother me.
--I'm not sure, but I think that Warren and I are becoming "that couple".
--not being mentioned as one of Paris's hot girls of juggling :(
Goals:
--See Warren. Check.
--Juggle a little bit. Check.
--Have my act go well. I worked really hard this year and have done a lot
of artistic work. I really wanted to make a big impression even on the
people who have seen my act before... It seems to have worked. Most of the
new stuff worked although I did miss a few things I wish I didn't. I don't
think anyone really noticed though. I got heavy applause (although I don't
think anyone stood) and a lot of really positive comments after the show...
Crush:
--Warren for showing up all sexy. Who would have thought that constant
insults and teasing could actually make someone hotter?
Bane:
--long drive and long training weeks meaning that I don't really get any
time off to recover.
There was probably some other stuff that I wanted to say, but I forgot.
Thank you to all the people who told me that they enjoyed my act, I've
worked very hard to create something unique and interesting and it really
means a lot to me when you take the time to tell me you liked it. It will
only get better from here.
Cate
> --Meeting cool new people: Dana, Lyndsay (Lindsay?)...
Yes, she is Lindsay.
Thanks, I thought that was it, but I also thought that I had seen it
written Lyndsay before... Anyway, it was nice to meet her.
cate
High: Getting to the Festival finally.
Seeing Joe nail his routine. Best club act of the night in my opinion. I
even convinced Joey that this was a true statement, too. DUDE YOU DID IT!
Steve P's routine. He totally stole the show. Peter's routine. Nick
Flair's Routine
The box jam with Sean then the box jam with Nick Flair after Sean left.
Sorry buddy. Sean, I have a few sweet tricks to show you. I even had
Nick trying 4 box tricks.
Hanging with the Joshua house jugglers.
Hanging with the Nate apartment jugglers.
Talking and joking with Sean and Marcus around in the McDonald's. I
really needed someone to talk to besides the gas station attendants to get
my mind off my car. It helped for a few minutes.
Realizing photography has many possibilities. Of course it happened
without my camera present.
The renegade dance contest inspired by a passing car playing "Sandstorm"
on their stereo way too loud. For the record, I don't like that song it
just is most appropriate for my style of dance.
Juggling Fear Factor.
Watching Matt hit 2 of his three best tricks. Thats insane.
Seeing all the usual people.
Low:
Hearing griding while I was driving down the road. Bolas do make good
dollies for getting under your car though. Leaving the fest to get my car
fixed. Paying to fix my car.
Goal:
Have a major box breakout session. checkish. I sort of wanted everyone
to be doing in one corner all weekend. oh well.
Do something cool in best trick and hit it. fail. I do think I have
something for next fest though.
Meet cool people. check
Rejuvenate my juggling juices. check
Crush:
Joe. You did it!
Steve P. Duh!
Manuel I think my first reaction to seeing him juggle states it plainly.
"Dude, That guy is a [juggling] monster!"
Matt Hall's minions
Bane:
Noone in my car for the ride up or down. Its so sad traveling 5 + hours
without saying how cool its going to be or how cool it was. My friends
bailed on me the night before. Don't be those people its a dick move.
Surpise:
Coming up with a really cool idea like the dance contest versus Paris.
And having Paris agreeing to partake. I have to say I was inspired by
your dancing at Philly, man. I need a song that is more appropriate for
my dancing style next time. :) Having Matt break was freaken' sweet, too.
I was caught by complete surprise when that happened.
Dominque and Louis showing up! The fest would have been completely
different for me if you guys didn't show up. It was great to hang with
you.
Thanks to the brothers Billing, Pat, Linka, Dana and the other Cornell
Jugglers for putting on a great fest.
And thanks especially for my gracious crash space hosts Joshua and his
family then Nate and Kate.
I'll see you all at the next fest,
jöhn
^Greg Phillips approved these rock dots after public disdain. Sweet
success. Why does he approve now?
> ...but I also thought that I had seen it written Lyndsay before...
Yes, I had seen it written also as Lindsey and Lyndsey. :-) Well, it
doesn't matter.
I forgot to mention these have inspired me to make a real box routine.
Not just working on single tricks like usual.
awesome,
jöhn haffner
^ Greg Phillips approved the use of dots. Whats next? Tristian ceasing
to poke?
Here's my HLGCB, hard to keep it brief because it was such an incredible
Fest!
Highs
-The trip down with Warren Hammond, and the Pryntz-Nadworny bothers Avi
and Rafi.
-Getting there for the lecture on Friday and seeing Matt Hall and Joe
Showers demonstrate some beasty siteswaps for the audience.
- Playing Combat at a festival for the first time ever and actually doing
alright. Particulary enjoyed getting knocked out by Laura Ernst, Warren
Hammond, Matt Hall, Joe Showers, Cate and others. I'm addicted now.
-The Billings brothers for all their effort in making the fest so great
and housing so many people at their home once again.
-Seeing so many friends again, and seeing the U of R club in attendance.
-The Renegade show! Watching Rick Denaker win the extreme Juggling fear
Factor juggling a squid, a crab and a piece of dried fish!
-the Show, but in a much different manner than most.
here are a few of the reasons why...
-I got to work with Matt Hall, and that guy really works when it comes to
a show. Seriously. His attention to detail and concern for the performers
was awesome.
-Dana and Linka the stagehands or "Minions". We had virtually no time to
get everything ready for the show and I basically told them. "help the
performers" They did it all beautifully.
-Unexpected stage hand Warren Hammond, Warren was everywhere!
-Kassie the sound tech person. Because we had video, and cds, and mp3's
and lighting changes you could literally see her running from one end of
the sound booth to the other during the show. It was a tribute to her
skill that we had so many things work so well.
Low
-Missing the games because I was trying to get into the theater pre-show.
Goal
-play combat at a Festival- check
-Do whatever I could to help the show be a success. -check
-learn a new trick -check
(Thanks to Greg Phillips for that)
-learn something about routine creation -check
(Thanks to Sean Blue for his workshop on Sunday)
-See Avi do his Poi routine from the audience, not backstage, -check
-take video -NOT, camera never left the bag.
-take lot's of pictures -NOT oh well..next time
Crush
Male - Steve Patrowski, nuff said.
Female - Joyce Billings, the unexpected super support crew to her sons at
the show and fabulous house host.
Bane
not enough hours in the day, I really wanted to play combat more on
Saturday or Sunday.
Highs:
- Chilling backstage before the show with the performers. I didn't think
being a minion could be so much fun.
- Meeting Matt Hall and hanging out during the Renegade.
- Renegade in all of its glory. I eat lunch at the Big Red Barn every
other day and now I can think only of squid.
- I got to meet Steve Patroski backstage.
Lows:
- Being at the gym for only an hour on Saturday. I had to finish my
costume for the Halloween party (which was the same time as Renegade) and
then leave early to be a minion for the show.
- Not watching the show because I was behind black cloth, but at least I
got to watch Jonglissimo's act beforehand.
Goals:
- Everything run smoothly: half success
- Talk to people I've met through other fests: fail. Combo of shyness and
not being around.
- Meet people: success.
Crushes:
Paris: The act at Renegade and the black equipment were both awesome.
Steve Patroski: I have to admit I have a thing for scarves and ribbons.
Matt Hall: Best cigar box best trick.
Cate: her routine is so beautiful, so creative, and so breathtaking. It
makes me want to learn the art of handstands.
Bane:
- Crash space issues. I never knew it would be so hard to get enough
people to offer space and then follow through.
After a week of sleep and a little homework, I wanted to post too.
High:
- Jugglers in the gym (all of you) & the high level of everyone
there. I remember watching Jonglissimo's workshop and seeing Karas &
Sean Blue practicing, and being impressed with the level of jugglers
in the room.
- Seeing everyone there (insert your name here)
- Getting Paris' "come to harlem and I'll take care of you" offer.
- Hanging out with Matt Hall on Sunday night
- Steve Pratroski, working with him the months before the show,
meeting him and of course his performance.
- Finally getting a renegade show at Cornell
- Getting good feed back on r.j / hearing that people had a good time
- Jonglissimo, they are some rockin' jugglers and it was really good
to hang out with them. Jon and I have so much in common with them
(except those 2 gold medals)
- Allen Knutson's mathematics of juggling lecture with Matt Hall, Greg
Philips and everyone else.
- Good combat game on Friday night / getting Vova out.
Lows
- Realizing at 1am that a performer need to be driven to the airport
at 3:30am :-(
- Pulling the all-nighter to get the performer to the airport (goes
with the territory)
- Three juggling festival on one weekend
Goals:
- Juggle at all - done
- Run a smooth and awesome festival - 9/10th check
- Sell out the show - 490/600th check
- Jonglissimo have inspired Jon and I to become great passers.
Crush (es)
- Marcus Monroe - he is one funny dude
- Jeff Peden - for being such a huge help and sharing some veteran
knowledge
- Manuel Mitasch - what an incredible juggler
- Nicholas Flair - great juggler, great teacher and awesome performer
- Linka, Dana, Jon, Dean, Shern, Susan, Patrick, and everyone else
from the Cornell Juggling Club who dealt with my insanity and put on a
great festival
Bane:
- Being super tired on Sunday
- Lexmark Z22 printer & CIT ethernet
Surprise
- Jonglissimo, their skills, their friendliness, their performance.
These guys rock!
I'm sure that I am forgetting stuff. I want to thank everyone for
coming and helping make this a great weekend. I was a pleasure for me
to organize it and I look forward to seeing you at the next festival
and at Cornell next year.
