Everything Included Pheasant Hunting South Dakota
So, if you're going to be Pierre, South Dakota anytime soon, and want to go pheasant hunting, then I would recommend the ScatterGun Lodge. For those who can drop the money (because it does cost quite a bit), it's an all included hunting experience (with guns, ammo, dogs, transportation, guides, five star housing, food, nightly entertainment, etc.) and your skill level doesn't matter. So, naturally, the more experienced pheasant hunters aren't looking for the five star treatment, they just want to shoot the birds, but if you've a got friend looking to get a great hunting experience, then this lodge is a great place for them (even Hank Williams Jr. liked it).... more »

2012 Pre-Roar hunt
We knew the deer weren’t roaring yet, but the plan was to get in and ‘team-hunt’ an area we knew of for one of the lads who would be in there during the roar-proper: we’d all go in, head off in different directions, and have a look around for him, reporting back on what we found sign-wise. Me, I was hunting the roar elsewhere. Sure, if a... more »

Has .45 ACP ammo disappeared from the market (again)?
Is it a local thing, supply & demand, more apparent than real? But my buddies tell me they can't find any on shelves in Twin Cities area.

A new year and a new place
A New Place The New Year was here, and the newest baby was sleeping through: I was off into the hills! In conjunction with The New Year and The New Baby, it seemed somewhat fitting that we check out A New Place, and so a couple of us piled into the 4x4 and drove down early with a cunning plan of checking out... more »

Camo gear for deer hunting
I want to buy some camo clothing for hunting deer in my area and was hoping to get some advice. I'm looking at the gear on this one site... [link] but don't know what to get. Can anyone recommend what clothing I should get and what pattern would be best for deer? Does it matter what you're hunting when picking camo gear, or is it... more »

Chestnut soup and venison loin
My favorite lunch today, blackened venison loin and homemade chestnut soup. I have 2 mature Chinese chestnuts and in spite of severe competition from backyard deer, which wife won't let me shoot, and squirrels I get more chestnuts than I can even give away. I blanch and shell the chestnuts and freeze as needed. Soup is easy to make by sueting... more »
