In my case it's squirrels that take most of our chestnuts though my wife
will fight them off to get some!

Nuts have just about stopped dropping and I figure deer and squirrels
get 90% of them. I still manage to get enough for family and friends.
I blanch, shell and freeze them for soup and stuffing. Since chestnuts
are low fat, they only keep about a month in the refrigerator.

There is a time when the little guy in your yard would have been a legal buck here in MS. Now we have length and width rules that push us up to good 6 pointers. That is good, actually. More will grow up!

I saw this happen in PA where in the past buck seasons anything with horns was legal. Most guys never shot anything bigger than a spike. I was at a taxidermist there and saw a slew of deer heads in for mounting and most were forkhorns. Now in various regions of the state they must have at least 3 or 4 points on one side.

Here in DE except for doe seasons, any deer is legal. License comes with 4 doe/antlerless tags and you can buy one quality buck (>15 inch outside spread) tag which includes a tag for any other deer. You can buy as many extra doe tags as you want. State game lands will not allow you to take a non-quality buck and state park nearby that I hunt makes you take a doe before you take a buck.
