Nearly all of my almost 200 eBay purchases have been positive...but just
like anything else, you need to check the sellers ratings before purchasing
from them. I won't purchase anything from a seller that has less than a 98%
positive rating. I also won't purchase from someone that has only made a
"few" eBay sales. I've noticed that many "too good to be true" sales are by
people that have a history of two sales.
I purchased a bow on eBay and it was exactly as described...that being said,
I don't think it's a good idea for a new shooter to purchase used. I'd
rather see you go to a pro shop and get setup correctly the first time.
Unless you have a friend that is an archery expert, making a used purchase
isn't as easy as simply finding a good deal online. You need to be fitted,
you need to purchase the correct arrows and you'll need help making sight
adjustments.
I bought two bows off eBay and they where just as described. The best deal
had the case, arrows and some other nice accessories. I have had very good
experiences buying from EBay, just pay attention to feedback and ask all
questions BEFORE you bid. Get some good deals from other hunters "upgrading"
and getting rid of perfectly good bows.
Good luck with your new hobby! I've been bowhunting for the last 18 years
and love it. I prefer to bow hunt over firearms anymore. It's so much more
of a challenge and sense of accomplishment.
Enjoy!
I agree if you don't allready know a ton about archery and compound
bows I suggest that you seek an expert the first time around. If you
don't you will not have an optimal setup. These bows now days are
much harder to get setup correctly, especially if you are using a
dropaway rest and all the bells and whistles. I used to work for an
archery Pro shop back in the early 90's and I replaced my bow last
season and still made a couple of trips to see the local Pro for some
setup advice. Turns out my arrows were not quite correct even though
the "charts" said that they were a great match. A little tinkering
with the aid of his computer program and Viola a fine tuned rig!! You
can tell if you have a good setup with a little time spent paper
tuning.
Good Luck and welcome to the addiction.

I posted a similar question and got some good advice in this thread:

You can read about my experience there, but the bottom line is that a
new bow is more expensive (I'm in for $550), but may give you a lot
more confidence than a used one that you have to tweak all the time.
I got a new Bear Instinct on eBay for $280 w/S&H. After having mine
set-up at the local archery shop by a professional archer and hunter,
all I had to do is adjust the sight pins. Shoots like a dream.
