Are there very many basset hounds used for hunting anymore? I know that
they have been used for rabbits for a long time but I have not heard that
much about them "in the field" lately. Even though they arguably have
the best nose of hunting dogs, it seems that Beagles get the lion's share
of attention.

Does anyone know of breeders of hunting stock bassetts in the KS-IL-MO-IA
area?

I'm not sure how much people use bassets for hunting anymore, only that
some do. There was a little piece about rabbit hunting (of the formal
kind where the rabbit doesn't get shot) with beagles and bassets in
the Mpls Star/Tribune on Oct 12. There wasn't much information, mostly
pictures, but the article did give the name of the "guest huntsman",
Larry Pefferly of Cornersville, Tenn. The winning pack was a group of
beagles owned by Margaret Bradley of Hamel, MN which beat out two packs
of bassets, one from Illinois and one from Missouri. The article was
put together by staff writer Dennis Anderson. I suppose you could try
calling any of the folks mentioned, Dennis Anderson would probably be
the easiest to find, for more info on who owned these packs and their
phone numbers.
