What is the best treatment for a skunked canine? (other than tomato juice?)

When my lab got a spray from her head to her chest, I used Nature's
Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. I put in in a spray bottle and sprayed the affected
areas down and let it dry...after 2 applications the smell was 95% gone.
I've heard that female products- douches to be exact, work really well.
Can't imagine going to the store at 3am and buying a dozen of them,
though...LOL.

Try the below link. It gives a recipe for making a "soap" to help take the
edge off. I used it in the past and it does take the initial edge off the
smell, but it takes a long time for all the smell to work it's way off.

Upon the return of one of my GSPs after tangling with a skunk near our property
(he didn't get full-on skunked, thank God) I consulted the body of dog books
that I had. Since this occurred at about 1:00 AM, there was no chance of
obtaining "Skunk-Off" -- the only product referred to be of any benefit. There
were many home remedies that were referred to as "ineffective", including:
vinegar, tomato juice and perfumes. After several bathings with lemon fresh
"Dawn" -- which also is a low-buck flea bath used by vets and Petsmart -- the
dog failed to smell any better than lemon-fresh skunk. He spent the night in
his kennel, I think, knowing full well that he smelled bad. Time and frequent
washings with a surfacant (like Dawn - that lifts and removes oils) is the only
effective treatment that doesn't simple mask the funk.

This formula appeared on a chesapeake bay retriever web site:

1 qt - peroxide
1/4 cup - baking soda
1 teaspoon - liquid dish soap

mix and use immediately, DO NOT store - discard remaining liquid.
When it appeared, it got good reviews from those who tried it.

Never had much luck with the tomato juice, but did have real good luck with
this

1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid soap

This breaks up the oils in the skunk spray and allows the other ingredients
in the solution to do their stuff. The solution should be rinsed off the
dog with water.

Just @ anything mildly acidic. I've used disposable douches. They are
mostly vinegar which works just as well but they do come in a handy bottle
that you can stash in the glove compartment. (I never get in trouble
because my wife knows what they are for.)
