I have returned to rec.heraldry after being away for more than three
years, and I find it almost reduced to nothing. What happened in those
three years???

A triumph of spam and indifference. If you're on Facebook, you might check
out the Heraldry Society group.

Actually, one of the key things, was that pousers were continually
being exposed. They have retreated back to their "private" society
forums, where as officers etc of such societies they have more control
over the material.

Spammers too have made their infiltrations, but they pass. I still
find this forum to be one of the best truely "free form" places to
discuss any and heraldic matters: best links and more of a global
appeal.

Looks like some of the people who really "made" the old group are no longer
here.
Not that I blame them after the spam storm we had. Aint the same without
them...

The group is still here actually: Joseph McMillan just posted on
another thread. They show up, but they don't hang around: they
know . . . So, it's not the spam really; that comes and goes: it's
wide openess of the forum.

I know a number are still lurking with an occasional eye open.
However, heraldry deserves colour and closed groups such as the
Heraldry Society of Scotland forum or the American Heraldry Society
forum and others offer the possibility of pictures. This group has
been hit several times by spammers but also suffered from trolls and
what I would consider generally rude and bad behaviour.

Nevertheless, I find the group condusive to more forthright
examination of positions, including my own, than is possible within
the gentlemanly confines of closed groups. It is also able to take on
board those subjects which are allied but tangential to strict
armorial heraldry and have no other ready home. I trust it does not
wither away and I intend to remain.

However, given Andrew's encouragement above, I have for the first
time, tentatively, also put my nose above the parapet and surrendered
to experiment with Facebook this week. I am not quite sure yet how to
get the best out of it or how to thrash around subjects, no doubt I
shall learn. There are though a surprising number of former dwellers
in this space already there and it was a pleasure to find them. I am
sure there will be a different sort of dialogue there, I just hope it
does not consist entirely of "likes".

But if you want this or any other forum to work, throw in as many
contributions as you can.

As ever, I can only agree with nearly all the above, though nothing
reconciles me to a somewhat censored, narcissistic environment such as
facebook.

Two things come to mind, stimulated by notices in the White Lion
Society's newssheet (or possibly the Heraldry Soc's, I've managed to
lose the originals!). So, give me 24 hours and I'll get to work on two
curious features: (a) the arms of the Magna Carta Guarantors, (b) The
arms of lord Lingfield.

I hardily agree with everything you've said: though with respect to
pictures, we can all post URLs and other such uplinks as illustrative
enhancements. The beauty of this type of group over the private forum
is it's availability: in - out; no requirements - international.
That's why Ilike it.

As to bad behavior; you are right. I would add that, such emotions
are really the result of some sort of exposure of that which is less
than - accurate, on the up and up, etc, and the embarassment that such
people feel at by such exposures. I think it serves all matters
heraldic anyway, and this will not happen on the private forums.

I wll certainly keep posting and reading here though. There are
plently of private forums open to myself, but I have stayed here.

As for spammers, I just view those incidences as dry spells that
happen on all forums.

I agree, I don't book my face. (I emailed a national radio
personality about his links to Facebook, and now he uses my phrase for
those who don't "book their faces" (chuckle) he then announces his
own URL.

I'd like to see a sort of - wiki type website with an open forum like
this one: I think it's possible and can happen, though I don't have
any idea how to do that . . .

And I saw Francois Velde awhile back, but it was briefly and not since.
I'd like to think it's still the same, without the spam, but time will tell.

We've posted pictures before, both within posts and as links. Though the

The paradox was ever that private newsgroups, BBS, and web based apps would
kill the spam and trolls,
but gave editorial control to the (at least subconsciously biased) owner.
I've seen many boards where a moderator
would moderate and argue at the same time. And be insulted if it was pointed
out..

All i've seen on facebook is a page of this society or that telling "who we
are" gives their wikipedia entry and a few pics. Am I using it wrong? And
twitter seems to be one
long, neverending ad for books on ebay.

I believe the wiki software is available for free to those who want to
create wiki type apps for their company or organization or other
applications. Might be worth looking into.
Instead of a FAQ, we could have an encyclopedia heraldica.
