27 nov 12:49 Truffe: promettevano ordini cavallereschi della Santa
Sede, 2 denunce
PIACENZA - Promettevano ordini cavallereschi della Santa Sede,
intitolati a San Gregorio Magno e San Silvestro Papa, utilizzando
illecitamente il nome del vescovo della Diocesi di Piacenza e Bobbio,
monsignor Luciano Monari.
(Agr).
It is good to see such fraud (purported sale of chivalric orders)
investigated and prosecuted, especially given the Internet connection.
Hopefully this will serve as a warning to others involved in 'chivalric'
frauds of various sorts.
Kind regards, George Lucki
Several individuals in the US are implicated and their activities have
been reported directly to the Secretariat of State of the Holy See.

As you know, this scheme originated in Europe and functioned there for
quite a long time. It was the scheme's introduction to the US that
brought it to the light of day.
Here is an example of one of the sales pitch e-mails that were
circulating earlier in the year:

I heard that the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy was being
sold by the same gang for about 800 euros.

I read the above newspaper report and something doesn't 'ring true'
about it. Here are my comments anyway for what they are worth.
It says that someone used illicitly the name of the Bishop of
Piacenza and Bobbio to receive a Pontifical Order. Well, what happens
is when a person is nominated by a bishop via the Nuncio (And bishops
have to nominate via the Nuncio) is that if everything is ok the
Diploma and medal are sent directly to that bishop who was responsible
for the nomination who in turn gives it directly to the honoree. So
how could the name of a bishop be used when the medal and Diploma have
to be directly sent to him (the bishop) for distribution to the
honoree ????
The report says that an army official aged 23 also received it. Well
according to the regulations it is impossible for anyone below the age
to 40 to receive a Pontifical Order or for that matter a Pontifical
Medal either. Also the sums of 800 to 1500 Euros don't seem to me too
much, perhaps rather that "paying for the Order" the sums were merely
meant to defray the expenses of the local Ordinary of the honoree
responsible for the nomination which in any event is normally
reimbursed by the honoree -around 250 Dollars for the cost of the
medal and diploma ? And in any case a nomination from any bishop just
doesn't do - it has to be the nomination from the Bishop in whose
Diocese the honoree is normally resident. (Again according to the new
regulations).

Harry
I read your old posts on rec.heraldry and tracked your IP address. It
seems that we have corresponded quite a bit over the years and even
spoken on the telephone except that you used your real name then.
I will never understand why some claims to want to keep a low profile
and then posts under a different name, leaving clues to be traced back
to the source.
Best wishes,
David Pritchard
