Court of Chivalry 1634-40

The full texts of all cases brought in the Court of Chivalry between
1634 and 1640 have been put on-line in a searchable format by Richard
Cust and Andrew Hopper of the University of Birmingham, at
http://www.court-of-chivalry.bham.ac.uk/

The cases mostly relate to slanders and libels, but some deal with
disputes over coats of arms or claims to gentility - for example 514
Perrott v Perrocke, where a member of an ancient gentry family of
Perrott complained that his arms had been assumed without authority by
London merchants called Perrocke.

There is an interesting introduction, describing the court and its
brief period of activity (it was resurrected in 1634, partly to prevent
duelling, and abolished by the Long Parliament in 1640), though an
expanded version will be contained in the companion Harleian Society
volume, due to come out early next year - R.P.Cust and A.J.Hopper
(eds), Cases in the High Court of Chivalry, 1634-1640 (Harleian
Society, new series vol. 18, 2006).
