I shot in a casual turkey shoot today where the club provides the
ammunition--standard #8 "something Club" shells. My pattern was really
nice at 25 yards with a full choke from a Beretta 12-guage semi-auto,
but I might have won if there had been more concentration of pellets in
the center. The rule is, closest pellet to the X wins.

Should I get something like a turkey choke for this application?

It's definitely not worth spending major bucks.

"Turkey shoots" like you describe are more luck then worrying about a
super tight choke. Granted, you have to hit the paper target, but luck
plays a big part. The first time I shot in one of these turkey shoots, I
used a 20 ga. H&R single shot that I paid about $90 for at WalMart. All
it had was a modified choke barrel. Out of the ten rounds that I shot, I
won four. Some of the other shooters were using $1000 trap guns, some
had tight choked turkey hunting guns, but luck was on my side that day.
My family ate turkey for a month after that.

It is all luck (mostly) I have seen targets covered w/ shot lose and a
target w/ 6 shot in it win (one was touching the X). Not to say a good shot
can't up his odds by doing his homework, ie. seeing where the pattern goes @
25yds. Most of the time you are aim at a corner (or toward) not the X.
What I would like is a rim fire turkey shoot, but soon they would all go
home thinking it was "rigged" 'cause the best shot would always win!
