Was refreshing to see an actor with some good gun handling. Cruise got some good instruction and used it in the movie. But, he did the same thing in "Last Samurai". Watch his smooth draw and presentation, and just as nice, his holstering his piece without looking or fumbling. It was very much like Chuck Taylors methods but I didn't recognize the guy who did the training. Perhaps he was one of Chucks old students? No matter, the movie was entertaining and I thought Cruise did a credible job. I'm not especially a fan of his but he did well. The director of the movie went to lengths to make it a good one in a number of areas. What do you think?

I jsut saw the movie last night. I did not pay attention to the gun handling as I was just enjoying the movie. I was impressed by his slapping the gun aside the thug had on him after robbing the cabbi then drawing and double tapping the perp then his side kick who Cruise had to assume might be armed and dangerous too. Then the Classic one shot to finish the first perp off as he walks over his moaning body without blinking an eye LOL
Brutal man brutal!!!

I watched a week ago and had to comment to the wife about the scene where he double taps the 2 bad guys that stole the cab drivers wallet (Jamie Foxx). I just watched one of the gun shows on outdoor network or OLN right before that had, I believe Ken Hackenthorn (sp?) doing the point shooting/ double tap from the holster drill, he made it look easy, seems like Cruise took a class or 2 to pull it off so smoothly, overall the movie wasn't bad, plenty of gun play to keep you entertained.

Bob Ken Hackathorn is a very qualified shooter and instructor. I first met him while he was instructing for Chuck Taylor at Jeff Coopers Gunsite back in 1980. I think Kenny is still an active police officer in Ohio unless he retired from law enforcement. Foxx went thru a driving course out in the Mojave desert at the Bob Bondurant Race track near Rosamond so he could give a more accurate presentation as a high speed taxi driver! Cruise spent nearly three months practicing with an instructor of japanese swords prior to his Last Samurai movie. Not sure if it was Cruise's idea or the director? For sure he never did the jet flying in Top Gun !! <ggg> There are a lot of good shooters around but not as many that can shoot from concealed while wearing regular street clothes and under any kind of conditions. That takes a lot of practice that most don't care to do if there is no money in it. Ol Shy & Basshful

The director is Michael Mann, the same guy who directed Heat. That movie is well known for the firearms expertise that is shown. It looks like this guy is one of the few who likes to get it right. A rarity in Hollywood.

Cruise was trained by Mick Gould a former SAS operative. Gould also worked with Michael Mann for the movie HEAT as did another former SAS man, Andy McNab.

I watched these SAS guys train Robert De Niro for "Heat". They were tireless, relentless, the same assault course over and over all day long. Michael Mann has also used Jim Zubiena, IPSC Combat Master and part time actor for his training - William Petersen in "Manhunter" formerly "Red Dragon" and Don Johnson for "Miami Vice". Yes, Mann insists on real skill.

Andy McNab (McNabb?) also wrote "Bravo Two Zero" about his SAS unit Scud Hunting in Iraq then as POW in an Iraqi prison. I found it entertaining, especially when he described the "crazy" American POWs who would get a beating for talking, but immediately say something like, "Man, I could sure use a pizza now" just as the guards are leaving to wash the blood off their hands.
