I have found that Remington CB long 22 ammo in a 24 inch barrel will
make three sounds:
1)the firing pin
2)the report
3)the bullet striking the target
make three sounds:
1)the firing pin
2)the report
3)the bullet striking the target
If a 23 1/2 inch barrel or less is used, only the second sound is heard
because it is so loud.
The best explanation I have heard is that subsonic ammo is quiet with a
suppresser. To be quiet without a suppresser, you need the gas escaping
from behind the bullet to be subsonic.
