stock bolt?

Its better to get the right tool for the job, and note that the 870
and 1100 are different.

I've used a draglink bit for this, but usually an 8-point or 12-point
regular socket is better. I have yet to see a stock bolt with a round
head, always have been square or hex heads. I have a regular kit in
the gunsmith box, a couple of 3/8" extensions with a T-handle and
3/8", 7/16" and 1/2" 8- and 12-point sockets plus the draglink bit. I
have yet to find something that it wouldn't take down.

I use the largest Sears Craftsman screwdriver that my father left me.
It has a square shaft that you can put a small adjustable wrench on.
That really helps increase the torque. I know that the shape of the
blade is not optimal, but I still have not buggered up the screw too
much. I prefer the plain walnut stock, my wife prefers the shorter,
adjustable drop stock we found used in a gun store up in Vermont. I've
just learned to live with the shorter stock.

The bolt on my 870 looks like this:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/524594/remington-stock-bolt-870-12-16-gaug=
e-1-4-28-thread

It's got a round head with a slot. I wish mine had a hex or square
head. It would make changing the stock much easier.

anymore for stock bolts?

Never thought of it, but, yeah, that would work.

Im an "old timer"....and have a lug wrench hanging on the wall in the
hobby shop just for this. <Grin>.

You youngins...always doing things the hard way.....lol

Course I do have a nice BIG square shanked Craftsman screwdriver and a
crescent wrench beside it to turn stock bolts....but...I started off
with a lug wrench...and still use it now and again. In fact..I used it
last weekend to pull the buttstock on a SMLE <Grin>

Good for ya! I am just amazed by how quickly people turn to posting to a
usenet newsgroup when a moment of examination would answer their question.
Good lord - is there any self-sufficiency left in this world? And this on a
guns newsgroup...

Trust Remlington to make 'em cheaper. In which case, the draglink bit
comes into play. If you haven't seen one, it's just a giant flat bit
with a square socket on the other end to fit the extension. Have seen
ones for 1/2 and 3/8, none for 1/4" drive. Not even sure if Sears has
them anymore, that's where mine came from. Before I got that, I
borrowed a big screwdriver my dad had inherited from my granddad,
about 2' long with a handle to match.
