Bad Press?

plain, listening to an American instructor. He is showing them how to
use a new American rifle."
What is this new "American rife" shown in the photo? The press always
have a hard time getting the facts right.
The article goes on to state:
"In many Afghan units, the old AK47s are being thrown away now. The new
Afghan army will have new weapons: refurbished M16s.
The new weapons may be more powerful. In a firefight, they may give
Afghan troops an edge over insurgents who use Soviet-era AKs.
But the new rifles are also unfamiliar. They require more maintenance,
more care."

Sounds like a bad idea. While we don't really want our allies using
Soviet weapons, they may be the best choice for the Afghan army.
OTOH I suppose there are some new NATO nations turning out AKs today.

that's what you're asking, especially since they mention them being
refubished.
I'm not sure about the comment on them being more powerful. I'd give
the edge to the M-16 on a few points, but power? No significant
difference.
The comment about them needing more maintenance is probably fair.

Part of humor/horror? of my original post was the linked picture showed
the trainer and trainees with AK 47s, and thus my comment about the
press getting facts right. The benefit of the net news is it can be
corrected, unlike the paper printed press.

Does anyone but me think that giving or selling arms and arms technology
to other countries is insanity? History PROVES that allies and enemies
swap rolls frequently.

They had some flavor of Kalashnakovs when I looked as well. Mass
hallucination perhaps.

It worked out pretty well in WWII, when we gave/sold arms to England,
the Soviets, etc. to use against the Axis.

Which left the Soviets well-equipped to take over Eastern Europe by
force immediately following the conclusion of hostilities against the
Axis. I think that was part of Mr. Boyd's point.
