Rifle Prop In Family Portrait Kills Woman
11:42 a.m. ET (1550 GMT) October 13, 1999

NEW DOUGLAS, Ill.
— A planned family portrait in western garb ended in
tragedy for Illinois teacher Judy Ernst when a rifle being used as a
prop went off and killed her, police say.

Ernst's farmer husband Harold was holding the rifle when the shooting
happened on Sunday in New Douglas, a tiny farming community in
southwestern Illinois, they said Tuesday.

He told police he had no idea the gun was loaded and did not know if
he had pulled the trigger. His 48-year-old wife was struck in the head
by the bullet as the couple stood a few steps apart.

"They'd been married at least 20 years. Everyone is pretty shocked,''
said a member of the local fire department, where Ernst was a
volunteer.

The Madison County Sheriff's office said the case was under
investigation but that Harold Ernst was not being held in custody.

Hmm, exactly how many firearms safety rules were broken, perhaps due
to ignorance on the Husbands part, that lead to this tragedy? And I
can just see Sarah Brady et al rubbing their grubby hands rejoicing in
this poor lady's death. If keyboarding is a required class that
Highschool student's must take to graduate, then why not the Eddie
Eagle Program? For that matter, to get a little off topic, why isn't
Driver's Ed a required class in most schools? Sorry for getting off
topic a bit, but one would think that with the lethality that comes
with the misuse of cars and guns our schools should be obligated to
teach their responsible and safe use. Sorry again, just venting.

Or perhaps a well thought out case of first degree murder. The press
would buy it because they think guns are inherently evil.

A sad instance, which should be looked at as one's negligence with
a firearm, but it will likely be portrayed as 'guns kill people'...
I agree with you on teaching firearm safety in schools! I had a Driver's
Ed class when I was in highschool, however, it wasn't required. I feel it
should
be, because just about every student will eventually drive a car... (and
cars kill
more people than guns!!) Now, not every student will own a gun in his/her
life, but chances are, they might come in contact with one at some point
or another, and just knowing the basics of safety, could end up saving
their own lives, or someone elses.
Education is the key, not hiding the object of the issue!

I agree -- murder is about as likely as accident. It could be either.
