Many thanks to the Washoe DA, Dick Gammick, Deputy District Attorney Nathan
Edwards, and their staffs.
Let's not forget Washoe District Judge Janet Berry, who proved that there
are still some thinking judges out there.

"[Nevada Governor Jim] Gibbons admitted last month to having surrendered

legally-required training for his nine pistols, though he had signed an
application saying he had.

"The sheriff ultimately revoked the certification of the firearms

Good outcome on the legal decision, but we do not need this kind of
hanky-panky. Rules apply equally to everyone.

Do you need to be checked out on each handgun that you own?

No. Not quite. NV law is pretty lenient. The law puts qualification
requirements only on guns you want to carry concealed not simply own. As of
Nov 2007, NV CCW laws say that qualifying with any ONE revolver authorizes
you to carry concealed ALL revolvers or derringers. Unfortunately, due to
the stubbornness of the Chairman of the NV House Judiciary Committee (Bernie
Anderson, D-Sparks), who amended the bill that would have allowed blanket
authorization, you still have to qualify with every semiautomatic you want
to carry concealed, by make/model/caliber (NO SERIAL NUMBERS). He stated
that the "buttons and switches" (his words) on automatics are just "too
different" to allow blanket authorization. If any one of the three elements
(make/model/caliber) are different, you have to qualify with it separately
if you want to use it for concealed carry. For example, if you are a Glock
collector, with one of every caliber, you still have to qualify with each
one, because the different calibers make the guns just "too different".
How about a 1911 collector? How many different manufacturers make a gun you
would commonly describe as a 1911-style and in a how many calibers? I can't
begin to count the possible variations. Yep, their "buttons and switches"
are "too different" and you would have to qualify with each one, if you
wanted it on your CCW permit. Fortunately, there is no limit to the number
of guns with which you can qualify. Also, Bernie Anderson is up for
reelection this year in Sparks, NV. Here's hoping his consituents will
finally recognize his incompetence and dump him.

In Nevada, if you carry concealed:

yes for each semi-auto;

yes for one revolver, no for the rest.

Even though the good Chairman is talking out his ass, he does make a
fairly valid point.

If one is going to carry for self-defense, one should be intimately
familiar with their weapon's controls, their placement & function. It
really isn't all that wise to have a different carry gun for everyday
of the week. When it comes to a self-defense weapon one should pick
the one that absolutely works best for them in overall operation,
effectiveness, shot placement & cancelable based on their body type.

If legislators paid attention to what worked in other jurisdictions
how could they ever gain the notoriety they desire by coming up with
some type of NEW inane legislation. They all love having Bills named
after themselves.

So I would always carry a P3AT that I can conceal wearing shorts and a
t-shirt in the summer, rather than carrying a more potent weapon when
heavier clothes are appropriate?

Nope.

I don't agree that a CCW holder should be familiar with the carried guns.
But, I don't see a need to formalize that process in law. It is the
responsibility of the CCW holder to be able to use his own guns.

The real irony is that here in NV we have legal open carry. No
qualifications or permits required. So, if I buy another auto, and haven't
had time to go add it to my CCW license, I can still quite legally carry it.
I just need to make sure my shirt tail is tucked inside the gun instead of
draped over it. (Things that make you say, WTF?) LOL

Limiting the carry permit to only "qualified" guns means those guns get
LISTED(registered!) on the permit.(and in State databases.)

It's just a sneaky backdoor gun registration scheme.

Just like requirements that permittees must fire so many rounds at X
distance and hit the standard target Y number of times,or achieve a score
of so many points(and requalify every Z number of years);they are just an
impediment to limit the number of gun owners getting permits.

Added expense,too.

Guess I'm getting too old to proofread my own stuff. It should have said "I
do agree that a CCW holder should be familiar with the carried guns." But I
think that should be up to the carrier, not the law.

And I agree with your registration suspicions.

Sounds like a person should have to qualify to drive different makes and
models of cars since all those "buttons and switches" are in different
places in each one.

Shhhh. Not too loud with that suggestion. LOL Actually, I ran into that
buttons and switches problem one time. I flew into D.C. one evening and
picked up a rental car at the airport. Just as I was getting on the
highway, it was getting dark and starting to rain. I had a devil of a time
finding the dang controls for the lights and wipers because they weren't in
the locations I have on my vehicles. Yeah, I know you are supposed to pull
out the owner's manual and read it before driving an unfamiliar car. But
come on, how many of you guys actually do it? Ha.

It's actually true for airplanes though not generally required by the
FAA unless it is a MAJOR differences such as single engine vs.
multi-engine, or prop vs. jet.

Airplanes are similar but enough different that what you assume about
one can get you killed in another.

But rental agencies and such DO make you "check out" on a new plain/type
if you have not flown it before, and usually if you haven't flow THEIRS.

My buddy and I actually "stole" a rental car one time by mistake -- I cannot
remember which of us actually rented it but we went to a conference,
grabbed an Avis car and went to the event.

There we noticed that there were about a half dozen cars of the exact same
model/make/year/color as our care in the parking lot IMMEDIATELY
around where we parked.

We thought that was pretty funny and made a point of remembering exactly
which parking slot we were in.

Later that night back at the hotel, the Avis folks showed up and explained
that we had the "wrong" car. Seemed the key to OUR car easily started
one of the other (nearly) identical cars and we had taken the wrong one
all the way back at Avis.
