Carried one for a while
Simple, effective and can do the job
Migrated to Keltex P11, P40 and P3AT
More power and less bulk for for the same size .
My Makarovs, are now my "goto" guns for emergencies, located in concealed
positions with easy access if you know how to get to them.
Cons
A little heavy for output
Bulkier than needed for the cartridge
Can be a little rough out of the cosmoline
The 9x18 is not a powerhouse
The magazine catch is not quick
Pros
Reliable
Reasonably accurate
Smooths up with use
Cheap to feed so a person can afford lots of practice
Inexpensive to purchase
I'd say the pros outweigh the cons, especially if you can't afford
something lighter, more compact, or more powerful.
Pro: Well made (Russian/East German ones), reliable, cheap
Cons: Heavy for its size,
rounds are a bit on the small side
rounds are not as easy to find as full size 9mm
rounds are typically east euro/russian - dirty
not very pleasant to shoot... sharp recoil, getting a Hogue rubber grip
helps
if your hands are large, it can really hurt to shoot it (bites the web
between thumb and finger)
They are kind of heavy for CCW. Try a Keltec P3 or a Ruger LCP.

I wouldn't feel undergunned...
I have two of them; a Russian commercial version (Baikal) in .380 and an
East German military surplus version in 9x18. They are both extremely
reliable with surplus ammo, modern factory ammo, and reloads with plated
lead bullets. The simple blowback design allows for a rigidly-mounted
barrel and pretty decent accuracy. The sites are pretty fine for defense
use, but practice makes perfect, or you could replace them....
There are certainly lighter, slimmer, and/or more powerful pistols, but the
Maks are a tremendous value (at least they used to be; I don't know what
they cost these days).
Good shooting,

I also loaded it with MagSafe rounds. The MagSafe company folded after
the owner passed away and the later MagSafe rounds made but the new
company weren't as good. I gave the Mak to my daughter and she
mistakenly fired the MagSafe rounds while we were target shooting. Pop
3 bucks, pop 3 bucks...
Now we can't find .380 anywhere and the only 90 grain bullets I can find
for reloading are Barnes solid copper slugs.

# The PA63 is basicly a Walter PPK in size which is great for concealing.
# Also, I find 9X18 easier to get then 380's
# Frank
actually,it's more like a Walther PP than a PPK.
PPK being "Police Pistol KURZ",meaning -short-,whereas the PA-63 is the
regular barrel length of the PP,from which it was copied.

The FEG PA63 is similar in size to the Walther PP, not the PPK. The
FEG R61 is similar in size to the PPK.

I had one for a few days. Seemed overlarge for the caliber, heavier than
it needed to be, and the grip didn't fit my hand very well. Sold it.
Still have a couple of nice magazines if anyone wants to swap.
I found that a set of Pearse grips tamed the sharp recoil, and after
that, the Mak was quite useful.
