I'm looking for a national (or state by state if needed) database similar to
this one:

http://pas.fdle.state.fl.us/pas/item/displayGunSearch.a

Here in NJ, you can't be too careful when buying a gun so I'd like to double
check that each one is absolutely clear for purchase (not stolen) as best as
I can before I start buying.

....And yes, I know I can go to the local PD and ask them, but I'm in a very
small town and their resources are split up and difficult to access now. No
need to raise my tax bill just so they can hire an investigator for me. :)

The database for stolen property is a police-only thing, as far as I
know. And most places, they won't check for you, as a mere civilian,
unless you're buds with one of the higher-ups. Generally, if you buy
from a dealer, you're safe. They have to book them in and out and keep
track of who they bought things from. Here, the pawnshops have to send
in a weekly list of stuff they've bought so the cops can check the
stolen property lists. Don't know of any other lists that cover the
whole US, some of the fora have lists of stolen guns from their
memebers, but those are usually specific to one make or model. And
none of them will cover the case where a guy doesn't report it stolen,
for whatever reason.
