I don't watch much TV and actively dislike crime dramas, else I might
have picked up on this earlier. Has anyone noticed lately a rash of
TV characters calling a weapon "semi-automatic" (one shot per trigger
pull) for something that was obviously full auto (multiple shots per
trigger pull)? The most recent was an episode of Hawaii Five-O, where
thugs robbed a delivery truck with what was obviously full auto
machine guns, which were later described as "semi-automatic". It's
starting to bother me. Once or twice might be a mistake, but it's
almost like someone is making a concerted effort to change the
terminology. So, if a machine gun is semi-auto, what would full auto
be? It pulls the trigger for you?

Maybe the writers just watch too much TV news? They've been in the
habit for many years of showing clips of people shooting full auto
weapons during stories about "semi-automatic assault weapons"...

Goes along with "semi-auto assault gun", "semi-auto machine gun" and
similar descriptions. Don't watch network TV, it's too depressing as
far as quality is concerned. We already know there is and has been a
long-term media effort under way to ban guns, this is just another
part of it and there's little we can do about it. And yes, when
they're out to get you, you don't HAVE to be paranoid.

I hear you on that - have seen it in other shows. Normally it is
a bad guy shooting up another or blowing up a car/truck to steal from
it.

It is a troubling issue. Not many years ago they were calling
semi-automatic guns machine guns. Now they just don't say.

It looks like a brain-washing mode of Hollywood and maybe in coot-hoot
with the FBI or with the White-House pushing another agenda.

This might be part of the gun runner issue flying in their eyes at this
time.

Oh - haven't heard about it in a couple of weeks now. coverup ?

I was called for jury duty late last year. "How many of you will have
difficulty convicting with no forensic evidense?" No hands. "How
many of you watch CSI?" Lots of hands, including mine. "Number, ah,
24, Mr <I forget, don't care>, how beleivable are these shows?" He
holds his arms out away from his sides. "Hollywood," he titls one
arm, "Reality," the tilts the other way. Gog a laugh from everyone
except the now convicted felon sentenced to 15 years.

Ah, you walk into a "Stop & Rob" and buy a beer. Walk back in a
minute later and hold the door for a guy with what later turns out to
be a full-auto "mini" Uzi (hot off the Mexican border). Gun guy
points at cashier, beer guy hands him a bag. Cashier puts $18 in the
bag. Gun guy hits him with the gun. Guys high-five and walk out. Oh,
and beer guy looks up at the camera and flips it the bird, then gun
guy does the same. All presentd and trial and not well refuted by the
defense. They argued that he was high on meth and PCP (PCP????). Show
of hands please. Not guilty?

Prosecutors really, *really* hate CSI. :)

Not all that uncommon a combination where I live. Talk about goofy...I'm
surprised he wasn't bouncing off the walls.

When I was playing cops and robbers..there were individuals who tended
to lean towards meth and/or PCP..and when we had to take them
down..expected to have to really..really really work for the arrest. And
we often got hurt as did the perp. Fortunately I didnt have to shoot
one..but I had to break bones on more than one occasion to get them off
fellow officers, with a PR-24 used in "nasty mode". Screw saps..on
those guys..it was like swatting an elephant with a pair of socks...

Im aware of one that did an armed robbery of a convience store, and the
cops arrived about the time he shot the store owner and stepped out of
the door shooting as the cops were about 20 feet away. He sucked up (2)
hits from a 12ga shotgun...daylight could be seen from front to
back...well..store lights..and yet managed to run..run some half block
+ before bleeding out and expiring on the sidewalk. Run at a very good
speed as the responding officers got their shit squared away and their
jaws up off the pavement in amazement.

He had hit one of the cops square in the vest and put him down and
everyone else was diving for cover as one managed to trombone two rounds
into him from less than 20 feet before rolling for cover when the perp
didnt go down. Clean undies time for the guys..

Now that I old and feeble...chuckle..if I encounter a freak stoked on
PCP....he will get the Mozambiqe Drill from the git go.

Ain't no cop, but had a run-in with some sort of flake when I was a
young man.

Was pumping gas into my CJ-5 with girlfriend of the time in the jeep.
Saw a guy running across a construction site about 100 yds. away
across a street. He came to the street, never slowing down, saw me,
and hollered "I'm going to kiiilllll you!!! I stood there thinking it
must be a joke, then he got to me, jumped up in the air and did some
sort of flying kick into my lower gut. Shoved me into the spare tire
on the back, got my shorts a little muddy from his foot, and landed on
his head on the concrete.

I started circling around him, thinking "If this guy gets up, I'll
probably have to hit him." He gradually got to his feet, and I
hollered "What in the hell's wrong with you??" For a fleeting second,
there seemed to be a glimmer of rationality, then he staggered across
to the door to the filling station (Pete's Gulf in Lake Jackson, Texas
on 332, about 1976?) and collapsed through the door.

As I heard sirens, the employees came out from behind the store, tire
racks, what have you, and a large crowd of folks came running up that
had been following him. They had boards with nails through them, that
sort of stuff. They told me he had run through Denny's screaming at
the top of his lungs before heading up 332. That's about 1 mile away.

We had a game to go to, so I didn't wait for the cops. No idea what
happened to the guy. He was wearing an airman's uniform, I think.
Very muddy and sweaty.

End of story.
