About a week ago I caught part of the Diane Rehm show on NPR. I don't like
Rehm; she sounds like a rusty hinge and she's the queen of bleeding hearts,
but during her interview with poet Maya Angelou she went fishing with the
question, "You were brought up with guns in the house?" (Rehm, needless to
say, is deliriously anti-gun). Maya Angelou proceeded to give a very calm
and cogent recollection of her mother keeping a gun in the house for
protection, and how she (Maya Angelou) thought women should have a gun at
home. She said, (I paraphrase) that the police won't save you, and if bad
guys break in to do you harm, it's best to deal with them yourself.
You could tell Rehm was totally taken aback by this. She's too liberal to
criticize Maya Angelou, celebrated woman poet and African-American, so when
Angelou was finished she said simply, "OK."
So don't mess with Maya, OK? She's packing.
